Getting really confused. Who has got married and either you or your partner was born BEFORE 1983? What proof of identity did you take ? Gov website and local council website contradict each other

Birth certificate

KedgeIsland · 01/02/2022 10:06

Well before 1983. I took a passport, and utility bills /council tax bills as proof of address.

weddingfun · 01/02/2022 10:06

Was a valid passport not an option instead of birth certificate ? And did you also need mothers birth certificate ?

Do you have a current passport? If so, that will be the best option as it proves your nationality, full name, age and is obviously photo ID. The law changed in 1983, so if you were born in the UK after 1/1/1983 you aren't automatically British. If you don't have a current passport and were born after 1983 you'll need to take your full birth certificate (showing your parents' names) and proof of your mother's nationality too (either birth certificate or passport).

weddingfun · 01/02/2022 10:31

It's the way it's worded that's confusing me. States you will need a valid passport but then goes onto say if you were born after 1983 you'll need a full birth certificate and mothers birth certificate. But on the gov website it says if you were born before 1983 you will need to provide birth certificate.
I could cry 😭😭

I'm autistic and I always get like this with any kind of rules or requirements I have to be 100% sure or I freak out

This is on the bottom of the email - is it saying a birth certificate for after 1983 if you don't have a passport ??

Hey don't stress, do you have your birth certificate?

I'd take it and passport. Remember you can buy a copy of your mother's if you need to.
In fact they are public documents anybody can buy anybodies birth certificate.

Matilda1981 · 01/02/2022 10:37

Birth certificates issued before 1983 were full ones showing both parents details; newer ones don’t hence the need to take your mothers birth certificate as well if you don’t have a passport as proof of born aged 1983

BertieBotts · 01/02/2022 10:38

Can you give them a call to clarify?

weddingfun · 01/02/2022 10:50

Just trying to find my birth certificate but I do have a valid passport

I'm 1980 and DH 1978 - we married in 2019 and all we took was passports and our birth certificates. We're in Scotland though so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

soontobeamama · 01/02/2022 10:59

We took our passports and birth certificates, they can look up parents birth certificates for you, you don't need to take them.

WhatsWithAllTheCarrots · 01/02/2022 11:02

I read that as you only need your birth certificate if you don't have a valid passport.

Sleepyquest · 01/02/2022 11:05

We definitely did not take birth certificates. I'm reading that as a passport is fine, but if you don't have a passport then you need the birth certs.

duvetdayforeveryone · 01/02/2022 11:06

You are not dumb. Planning a wedding is bloody hard work, with many moving parts, and it can be extremely overwhelming.
But, on the day you will have a wonderful time and it will all be worth it :)

weddingfun · 01/02/2022 11:07

See I'm reading it aslong as you have a valid passport then it's fine too, birth certificate only needed if you don't hold a valid passport. I wish they would word it like 'if you've got a valid passport you don't need your birth certificate' because stuff like this sends me over the edge lol

OP posts:
weddingfun · 01/02/2022 11:08

I do have a valid passport and so does my partner. I just wanted birth certificates just incase for my own peace of mind. But turns out I've only got the basic version anyway not the full one with parents details on. Can't really afford to be sending off for copies

OP posts:
rocketfairy · 01/02/2022 11:20

You're not dumb, clearly this is confusing in 2 ways - because of the discrepancy you've noted and then because of the wording. But if you both have passports I'm reading it as that's all you need Smile

rocketfairy · 01/02/2022 11:24

It makes sense that, assuming no passports, if you were born before 83 then you'd need a birth cert only and if born after then you'd need your mother's too to prove nationality. So that accounts for the discrepancy. And if you have passports you don't need either - which clears up the wording

rocketfairy · 01/02/2022 11:24

Enjoy your wedding! Daffodil

weddingfun · 01/02/2022 11:31

I think I'm starting to get it now that you guys have explained it clearly to me. So valid passports and we're good to go? Thank you! Sorry to be such a flapper but these things really get to me ! I was just as bad going on holiday with all the new requirements, the state I got myself into 😩😩

OP posts:
Lockdownbear · 01/02/2022 12:16

I can't remember the details but there is something about people born before 83 having rights to their children being given automatic citizenship regardless of where they were born.
Enjoy your wedding. The day goes so fast.
