Any farmers around? Marooned sheep.

Dd goes open water swimming with a university club. They've just revisited a lake that they last swam in 2-3y ago. There is a small island in the middle of the lake. Last time they swam to the island they found a single sheep on it. This weekend they think they found that same sheep, as the single sheep on the island appears excessively fleecey.

Should somebody be informed? Who?

Call RSPCA

Not that I know a whole heap about sheep, but does the fleece have any markings on it?

Sheep will be fleecy this time of year. Sheep shearing is around May time.

Is there a nearby farm with sheep in it? Or any local farm will do. They will know most of their neighbours. Or know someone who knows someone...

Grinnypiggy · 31/01/2022 23:12

Just ask local people who the local farmers are? Go into small shops or pub etc.

Grinnypiggy · 31/01/2022 23:13

Or Google nearby farms and phone one of them. Any one! They'll know whose it is.

Check your local council website. Ours has an email address to report escaped livestock.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/02/2022 05:01

Yes try the council or pop into a random local farm.

I once accidentally herded a load of sheep along a road in a rural area. They were all over the road and after I realised they wouldn't move, I tried to drive slowly round them, but instead of them letting me past, they went along in front of me.

After a few hundred yards I decided that if I continued, the sheep could end up miles from where I was supposed to be so I went back to a farm I'd just passed and luckily there was a farmer in the yard.

They weren't his sheep but he knew straight away who they belonged to and phoned the other farmer so they could go and get them off the road and back into the field they had escaped from.

Pop a post on Facebook, that is what people around here seem to do.

Yes, this

I’m intrigued by how the sheep got there!!

Wallywobbles · 01/02/2022 05:32

Most sheep don't like being alone. It's likely to be pretty unhappy so please do try and sort it.

FlapsInTheWind · 01/02/2022 05:33

Call two or three local farmers, they all know each other.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 01/02/2022 06:08

Stick a message on Facebook.

Someone will know the names of the local farmers and will figure out who it belongs to.

I live surrounded by livestock and that's what we do whenever they escape, which appears to be most days Grin

Devastatedyetagain · 01/02/2022 06:40

Contact Animal Health at the latest cal Trading Standards - they will be able to find the owner and deal with it.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/02/2022 06:42

I have used facebook for this type of thing

Dilbertian · 01/02/2022 07:51

Thanks. I will pass these suggestions on.

They're not local to the lake. They were swimming a long way away from their home city, and told me about it after they had returned.
