Visiting St Andrews

Has anyone got any suggestions about things to do in St Andrews? Going to visit our child who is at University, not fans of golf though!
Not taking car so would be reliant on public transport
Thanks in advance

Lots to do in St Andrews, lovely beaches for walks, great bookshops, museum, decent shops if you like shopping, fab cafes, bars and restaurants. You don't need a car.

Restaurants: Mitchell's, Forgans, Rav, The Doll's House, to name a few

Nice place for wandering around, plenty of shops and cafes.

How are you getting there, the train station at leuchars is a bit out of town, so you’ll need a bus or taxi .

The beaches are just lovely. (My stepson was at St Andrews). There’s a beach with a forest and dunes on the way to Dundee that was gorgeous for a walk. We stayed at Kingsbarn and there was a famous toastie shack on the beach there, with a lovely costal path for walks.

Craigtoun country park is nice but it’s a couple of miles out of the city so not sure how easy it is to get to by public transport. You could also do a day trip to Dundee, I’m sure the stagecoach buses link the two cities.

Go to Anstruther Fish Bar for a chippy. Kate & Prince Williams fav although not sure She was eating a lot of that battered fish! Lovely walk about Cellardyke harbour, visit Isle of May from there on a boat trip? Dundee isn't far away either. There's the V&A, Discovery Ship. St Andrews is a lovely place to people watch from a cafe, book shops & gift shops are great too if you like a browse. Beach is always worth a walk. Stay at Fairmont Hotel & there's a swimming pool, spa etc. afternoon tea is superb there.

The forest @Honeyroar is talking about is Tentsmuir. Note it’s recently had very bad storm damage and at weekend the website said it was closed (although I’m sure you can access it on foot so I assume they meant the car parks within the forest).

I’d give Temsmuir a swerve while they deal with storm damage.

There are 99 service buses every 10 mins or so from Leuchars station in to town. Same route takes you to Dundee so that’s easily doable on public transport. There are buses to Anstruther and the other villages but they can take an age unless you get the X60 which makes limited stops and takes 20 mins. Same bus will also get you to Edinburgh if you fancy it.
St Andrews itself could really be done in a day, it’s the food tour that would pad out a visit.

St Andrews is beautiful. Make plenty of time for coastal walks and eating seafood in pretty much any restaurant - they are almost universally great. I can't remember the name of the theatre (perhaps the Byre?) but it's worth a visit and also does great food.

Wish I was off to St Andrew's to visit- gorgeous place!

Chilledchablis1 · 31/01/2022 22:20

Take the 99 bus to Dundee to visit the V and A . St Andrews itself is fabulous and, as others have said, lots of great shops , cafes and restaurants.

Thanks so much to everyone who replied, lots of different ideas of things to do and some restaurants to book in to :)
