Can I have a double mattress on a king size frame?

I am looking to upgrade my bed, however it’s super expensive and I’m a bit skint so I’ll need to do it in stages rather than go and buy everything at once!

Problem being I really want to upgrade from a double to a king size (frame first, then mattress, then duvet and covers) probably over a 6 month period.

Is this doable or will I not be able to use my current double mattress on a king size frame? Thanks in advance!

Yes it's doable but likely will hurt your legs everytime you get in/out of bed due to the gap

If I station it bang in the middle say, how much gap are we talking? Filled in enough by the duvet or could I just Step over it

You almost certainly can put a smaller mattress on a frame - all beds I've ever known have a solid or slatted base, so the mattress won't fall through, but I would imagine you'd be in for some bumped shins getting in and out of bed.

Can you save over the next 6 months, and buy them both together?

I’m 5ft 1 so a small step for someone large might be quite big for me Grin

Wouldn't the mattress move ever time you got into bed.

Undertheoldlindentree · 31/01/2022 21:13

Can you put bed up against a wall and use pillows or rolled up duvet to fill in on that side? Put king size sheet on top for now, but just remember not to roll on that bit Grin. Then no gap to step over!

Hi OP, do it the other way around. But the basic bedding, then mattress which will go over sides of old frame but would be fine and lastly frame. Also if you go for a solid wooden bed frame you should look at second hand as they will last a lifetime and just need a clean down

I've found there isn't even much difference between double and KS - 6 inches. Is it worth upgrading?

I speak as someone who has a super king size

We did this when we accidentally purchased a king size frame and double mattress in IKEA (it was a long stressful day…). We stuffed some pillows down each side until we got a bigger mattress.

I would have to knock through a wall to fit in a super king size, I’d love it though! - I just think I’d enjoy an extra 6 inches. Currently ds (1) is also in bed with us so a teensy bit of extra room would be nice. Also dh is 6”1 so his feet pop over the edge!

if it's a 4ft 6 to a five foot then it's only going to be a three inch gap, so probably a couple of pinches to the back of your legs as you get out but you should soon adapt!

if it's 4ft 6 to 6ft then more problematic...could you get a couple of body pillows and tuck them into the much bigger gap, use a couple of larger sized fitted sheets

TheGirlWhoLived · 31/01/2022 21:18

Pillow stuffing is a great idea, as is pushing it up against the wall and filling the gap that way, thanks both! Ok definitely doable. Saving is an option but not a great one… I’m a bit crap with money so short and sweet buys are the key! Otherwise I’ll get distracted and spend all my money on takeout coffee

Hi can anybody help me ? Ivw bought a gas lift ottoman bed base it was a total nightmare to build the gas lift pistons don't work and the gap all around the mattress is absolutely massive no matter where I put the mattress there's a gap I read on other sites add a topper my mattress already has a topper on there's atleast 12inch at the top and bottom and around 8 inches either side which is not the look I was going for I can basically see what's under my bed even with the bed made to try fill the gap at the top part near the headboard I've used pillows but this isn't normal surely???I bought the bed plus matching headboard from the same company .the headboard is free standing so don't attach in any way to the bed which is fine but how do I stand on trying to return this bed ?? As its not fit for purpose atall it's meant to be for easier storage but it will not lift up as like I said the pistons don't work ...I bought it from very.co.uk but the actually bed base n headboard are made and dispatched from a company in Yorkshire neither are open today for me to ring them it's had me in tears and it took 5 people 8 hours to build as the instructions was ridiculous we've had to miss certain screws and bolts out as they don't fit properly or line up .this bed is meant to be from a luxe range but feels very basic and not as well made as made out to be ??so upset about it all tears are rolling down my face as I type this out please help 🙏 why don't my 4"6 mattress fit my double 4"6 frame??? A few centimetres would of been OK but inches and feet is NOT OK I bought this on buy now pay later I live in a small house and needed more storage which is why I chose an ottoman bed to use up valuable dead space I sold my old bed and now wish i hadnt this new bed is unfit for purpose if it dont fit or lift up easy for me to get the underbed storage???
