Eggs past “best before”

I got home to find my son has been baking buns, but the egg he used was a rogue one from an old box. Best before...10 days ago! (yes I should clean my fridge out more frequently). He said it smelled fine, and it's fine, he’ll test them on his sister Hmm. I'm inclined to think the buns will be inedible. What do others think?

They'll be fine.

NuffSaidSam · 30/01/2022 15:03

It will be absolutely and completely fine.

A bad egg is easy to detect.

RunningFromInsanity · 30/01/2022 15:04

Are there any left?
Test them in water, if they sink they are fine, if they float they are bad.

ShakespearesSisters · 30/01/2022 15:04

I do the water test on eggs. Often ok up to 3 weeks after the date stamp, never had one float at 10 days over. I think you will be fine.

boatyardblues · 30/01/2022 15:05

Yeah, should be fine. Less fresh but fine. You can do a float test with eggs to see if they’re still OK to eat. Jug of cold water. Add the whole egg. If it sinks it is safe to eat. If it floats up to the surface discard it.

Tinkles78 · 30/01/2022 15:06

Absolutely fine! Like PP said, put them in water. If they sit sideways on the bottom they're fine, if they're on the bottom but pointing up they're fine...if they float they're bad.

CamomileTeabag · 30/01/2022 15:06

I ate eggs a month out of date recently. They were fine, especially for baking (I suppose you might have noticed more that they weren't so fresh if you'd eaten them fried or boiled).
Believe me, you would know if an egg was bad!

Sprogonthetyne · 30/01/2022 15:06

If an egg is off, it smells vile when you crack it. I'm sure he would have noticed if that was the case

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 30/01/2022 15:06

You really do know if an egg has gone bad as soon as you crack it. The smell and colour gives it away. If he didn't notice anything off then the egg was fine.

Inspectorslack · 30/01/2022 15:08

They’ll be fine. If an egg is off you know it.

dangermouseisace · 30/01/2022 15:10

I remember my gran cracking a bad egg the smell hung around for hours, so it definitely didn't smell. It was just the one lonely egg so couldn't test the others. I'll assume they are ok then- it would be rubbish for him to have made so much effort and mess for nothing!

I've used eggs much older than that without any problems. You really would know if one was off.

It's a best before, not a use by date.

mynameiscalypso · 30/01/2022 15:11

Absolutely fine. Have you really never used an old egg? The ones in our fridge are dated BB 20 Jan and I used them to make pancakes for my toddler this morning. I'm pretty careful about BB dates but with eggs, they're ridiculous!

I read this as “January 20”, not “20 January” Grin

You’ll be fine OP, we should get rid of best before dates on stuff like eggs to encourage people to use their common sense

TeenPlusCat · 30/01/2022 15:12

Teach him the float test for next time.

DebiNewberry1997 · 30/01/2022 15:15

Totally fine. Eggs take ages and ages to go off and you definitely know about it when they do!

MiddleClassProblem · 30/01/2022 15:15

They are meant to be stored at room temp so maybe as you had them in the fridge it added to the longevity but he would know if it was off. Like veg, the dates are only a guideline.

jimmyreckon · 30/01/2022 15:22

My hens don't have use by stamps so unless it smelt it'll be fine 🥚

MrsDThomas · 30/01/2022 16:29

I always test my eggs in water. I dont buy shop ones, i like the honesty boxes on the side of the lanes. They dont come with BB dates,

YeahThankYou · 30/01/2022 16:31

Enjoy the buns, as others have said, they will be fine.

LIZS · 30/01/2022 16:37

As they are being thoroughly cooked it is fine. As a lightly boiled egg best not, if probably still fine.

ButtockUp · 30/01/2022 16:44

Keeping eggs in the fridge increases the growth of bacteria. They should always be kept at room temperature.
Eggs last longer than you think. If you're not sure , put them in a bowl of water. They'll stand upright if they're past their best.

All advice I've found, including the British Lion Eggs website says it's best to store eggs in the fridge!
Sahgah · 30/01/2022 20:34

You can check an eggs freshness my putting them I water and if they float they are not so good. Another way to tell how fresh is if you crack an egg and the yolk is all formed it's good to go. If the yolk immediately goes all runny it's probably not so fresh.

LawnFever · 30/01/2022 20:36

Nah they’ll be fine, you’d know straight away if an egg was off when it was cracked Smile
