Ikea worth the delivery cost?

I need some new furniture is ikea furniture really worth the £40 delivery fee? Or is Argos etc just as good? I can’t collect it from store as I don’t drive.

For wardrobes and beds - definitely worth it if comparing furniture at similar price points. My ikea flat pack furniture has survived my recent house move and still going strong.
Argos stuff I have had break just from normal use and within only a couple of years. Wouldn’t buy it again

RedCandyApple · 29/01/2022 14:43

The furniture does seem a lot better than Argos! Just resent the delivery cost as I only live about 4 miles from my local one 😣

Go with a friend who has a car, buy them meatballs while you shop.

They always mess up delivery for us!

Depends if you'd spend more than £40 on other stuff if you went there in person Grin I'm always happy to pay the £4 delivery for little bits. The £40 always stings, although they are usually 2 man delivery, call with updates and you have a 1-2 hour time slot thar you've chosen.

SoupDragon · 29/01/2022 14:46

I agree that the delivery cost is a lot but I think it's because their pricing is based on you picking the stuff up.

I am only about 2 miles from my local store but I've had big bulky stuff delivered (sofas & wardrobes) and it was worth the moment not to have to wrestle the items onto a trolley, into my car and then back out when I got home. Plus it would have needed two trips anyway!

AppleKatie · 29/01/2022 14:46

I would pay more than £40 not to have to go to ikea… so for me yes 😂

Nb- like the products well enough hate the ‘experience’

mummyh2016 · 29/01/2022 14:56

You can hire vans by the hour at my local IKEA, could you look into that if you're local? We had a delivery from IKEA last year and it was well worth the £40 however we did have a bed and mattress, wardrobe and 2 units. They deliver into a room of your choice, get a tracking link on the day of delivery and a call before with a time so no hanging around.

CraftyGin · 29/01/2022 15:13

I've picked stuff up in store (Pax, anyone), and handed them over to the independent delivery drivers - and then had to race them home.

I do like Argos as well. £3.50 for delivery a few hours later - hard to beat. They do sell reputable brands.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/01/2022 15:16

In short, yes, it is worth the delivey fee. They're just being more honest about the pricing. You don't really think that a shop can send 2 people even a short distance in a big van to bring you a wardrobe for £3.95 or whatever, do you?

Just look at the total cost. Don't see it as £300 plus £40 delivery but total cost of £340 or whatever.

The quality is excellent compared with similarly priced stores like Argos, Dunelm etc.

We live less than 2 miles from our Ikea, but paid a similar amount to have several Pax wardrobes delivered and 15 years later everything is still good as new.

cheekychaplin · 29/01/2022 15:16

It depends. I would t choose furniture according to delivery costs so if I wanted the IKEA stuff I would pay the delivery (have done in the past) - but equally I have bought things from Argos too.

I did and I live 1.5 miles from there.
Because it was a bed. Bedside drawers. Mattress. Chest of drawers x 2

It would have been 2 car loads. And figured the time I saved was worth it as was in the middle of moving so it got delivered to new house and I built it before we moved in. I also hate the queues. Had to get a sitter for the dc.

reluctantbrit · 29/01/2022 16:46

We got a bed, wardrobe and bookcases delivered last year when the stores were shut and nothing was up for collection.

They are great quality, I enjoy the fact that I managed to avoid the store and as other's say, it's the total price I look at, not the delivery charge on it's own.

H1Drangea · 29/01/2022 16:55

Yes , we had 2 chest of drawers and a huge full length mirror delivered
We’re about 60 miles away though , and it would never have fitted in the car ( and yes , DH would happily pay more than £40 to never set foot in IKEA again ! )

Kinneddar · 29/01/2022 16:56

If its really close what about trying a local 'man with a van' They'll possibly cheaper

One of our local ones actually advertises on FB & does regular IKEA runs. Genius idea he goes, collects everyone's stuff & drops it off for you. So you get your delivery for something like a tenner but he's potentially picking up a dozen items

Spectre8 · 29/01/2022 18:32

If your buying multiple bulk items then yes. I only had to buy a pax wardrobe frame cos I brok my other one moving it from one room to another. Thought i'd save £40 and put it in my car. Went on my own as noone else to help me. OMG it was heavy! Not to mention I snagged a guy in the carpark to help me put it in the car and it only just about fit in. He had to crank the passenger seat forward as far as i could , tip the seat down even then it was a struggle haha got it in.

Then on the other side I literally had to penguin walk it to the door, some passerby helped me in the end. I unpacked it down stairs and took it up in pieces.

If it was more than one item I would of paid!
