I’ve started taking protein to help with my strength training and it helped massively with hair loss!

Just that. 3 weeks ago I started taking whey isolate and eaas to help fuel my weight training. I have a small appetite and thought I might need help getting more protein in me.
After about a week I noticed much less hair on my brush. I thought it was a just a happy coincidence and that the hair loss would go back to its usual state of affairs.
3 weeks on and I still have minimal hair fall.
I am 54 and have noticed an increase in hair loss since my mid forties.
It was distressing and I tried pretty well all the recommended supplements and routines over the years- all did nothing.
I put it down to the lot of a peri menopausal woman.
So protein has really helped me . I was clearly lacking.
It might help others who are suffering. It’s not something I had ever considered as a contributing factor.
I take both everyday now whether I am training or not.

How do you use it?

BigButtons · 29/01/2022 13:35

As a drink- tastes like sqaush

I lost a lot of hair due to various reason & both my GP & trichologist said to have protein - eggs & whole fat milk.
Breakfast is always a boiled egg & I have a glass of milk before bed!

@MenopauseSucks I do wish someone had bothered to tell me that these last 10 years.

I started with really bad hair loss as well as very dry and brittle hair in my mid-40s. GP referred me to a dermatologist who said ferritin level needs to be 70 ( and preferably as near to 100 as possible). Mine was 32 which was fine in terms of anaemia but not enough for hair health. She tested vit D and that was low too. She put me on ferrous fumerate twice a day and a high dose of vit D and minodoxyl drops. I couldn’t use those though as they irritated my sensitive skin. Gradually (over 18 months) my hair stopped falling out but was still very brittle and dry.

I’ve been using olaplex 0,3 and 8 since lockdown and I can now see each strand of hair. Before it was so fine if I plucked a strand out it was virtually invisible. It’s not what I’d call good hair but the vitamins and olaplex as well as protein at each meal if possible has really made a difference.

A small handful of nuts every day are considered good too.

As is iron.

I give Holland and Barrets Hair, skin and nails to my kids 5 out of 7 days.

Cleared my sons slightly spotty skin, much stronger nails and definitely thickened their hair.

Worth a try.

The biggest surprise was my sons skin.
He had random spots around his hair line for years, but within weeks it was cleared.

Absolutely same here OP. It's such a relief. I have around 100 - 117g a day. Hair is actually behaving itself.

Do you eat protein in the rest of your diet too? I have the same hair thinning but would have said my diet was pretty high protein anyway. Eggs virtually daily plus lots of nuts, red meat a couple of times a week and lentil an pulses on other days.

BigButtons · 29/01/2022 22:35

@flowerycurtain I meat daily, like nuts, legumes, cheese, fish and other dairy. I have a small appetite though and just don’t think o was getting enough.
I had full bloods done a couple of mo the ago as I was always so tired and cold. Everything was good apart from my protein markers but the dr said to not worry about that so I didn’t.
It seems I did need to do something about it
Hmm

I’ve just had a look back through my last few months on My Fitness Pal and I’m generally about 20g shy of protein a day, compared to what it recommends Shock Have ordered some whey isolate so here goes.

I am considered with what I eat to avoid weight gain but I focused mainly on calories. That might have to change!

BigButtons · 31/01/2022 14:55

I am really trying to up my daily protein. It's difficult for me to do something like macros as I refuse to weigh myself. I am very slim anyway. I am just trying to do a best guesstimate . In any case the whey and the extra food protein is very much more than I was ever ingesting previously.
Hair loss is still minimal and my nails are growing more quicklySmile
