I was chatting to a friend about our ASD DCs rigid diets and started musing about how few foods you could have and thrive. By which I mean get the necessary vitamins and minerals and protein.

I think you could do it on lentils. Am I wrong?

Cheese. It has protein, fat and carbs. And almost all vitamins and minerals. Just need to top up with vitamin c (oj) and iron.

Vegetable topped pizza!

Some say the 5 a day was a marketing thing.

Avocado, broccoli, leeks courgettes, onions, strawberries and berries would be all id eat veg fruit wise and maybe 2-4 a day. I dont know if im deficient in anything tho. Would l9ve to know“

It was, in a way. 9 a day is more like it but it was thought that the public would find that a daunting target so 5 was settled on.

Apparently the poor in Ireland were pretty healthy living on a diet dominated by potatoes and milk. There is vitamin c in potatoes.

If you only eat rabbit, you will not survive! knowledgenuts.com/rabbit-starvation

I did actually know that ' 5 a day was just a marketing thing'. What I meant was, surely we do need some sort of ..... nutrients, vitamins, something that you can't get from only milk and potatoes? Vit c? Iron? Green veg nutrients. I just kind of struggle to believe that milk and potatoes is enough on its own. Surely that's lacking ... something?

My ex only ate chicken (preferably coated in breadcrumbs). Maybe the occasional portion of chips or a bacon sandwich. But it was just chiken, all the time.

Had done since he was a very small child. His mum used to laugh and say how healthy he obviously was as he had grown to 6’2”

He was the palest, spottiest, unhealthiest looking person you could ever imagine.

So not cheap, breaded chicken.

Did you know that Mexico has higher rates of vegetarianism than India (India as a whole)? So maybe the beans are what does it. Although you'd get Dahl in India.

OK my answer is now lentils and kale.

You only need to see around you the evidence and outcomes of poor nutritional choices and the host of diseases and disorders and ill health, physical and mental, directly and indirectly tied to these choices.

The key is eating nutritionally dense food in moderation.

Alongside being as sociable and active as is comfortable for you for best all round outcomes Grin

@Camomila

jacket potato with baked beans, and a glass of milk to drink.
Or for the milk-loathers like me, a jacket potato, beans and cheese.

I’ve done a fair bit of trekking in the Himalayas - the Sherpas all live on dhal bhat. They even wear t-shirts saying “dhal bhat power - 24 hour”. It’s simple but really nutritious.

I’ve practically lived off dahl and rice since I was diagnosed with coeliac disease last year.

That and jacket potatoes with butter and tuna and thrown in a couple of times a week.

I seem to react to everything else in one way or another.

I’ve actually never been healthier (despite one glaring problem that isn’t related to diet), or in better shape.

So there’s something in that.

I wonder why Jewish chicken soup is referred to as penicillin but not scotch broth 🤔
