Best way to keep drink hot overnight

123fushia · 28/01/2022 20:01

Elderly, disabled mum broke her arm in Nov. Since then a family member has stayed overnight to help, with carers coming for morning and bedtime care. We are just starting to move forward, leaving just carers to do the morning and bedtime duties and need to sort a hot early morning coffee so that she can take her meds. We have tried a coffee machine but she can’t manage it. Any advice for a flask or jug that keeps drinks hot for up to 12 hours. She can’t manage a screw top.

Our Asda flask has a push button middle. Warming up the flask with boiling water before adding the hot drink keeps it hot for much longer than not pre heating it.

What about a filter coffee machine that is on a timer? Could somebody show her how to do that? :)

Roseandrose20 · 28/01/2022 20:04

What about a teasmade?

I have this flip top Thermos cup that's astonishingly good at staying hot

A contigo flask?

nocoolnamesleft · 28/01/2022 20:08

I'm impressed. Despite years of trying I cannot swallow meds with a hot drink, has to be a cold one.

Alpenguin · 28/01/2022 20:17

I have a camelback travel mug that holds two cups of tea/coffee and keeps it drinkable for about 8 -12 hours but for the longer it has to be very hot to start with as it doesn’t lose heat quickly. You just press a wee trigger in the lid when you want to open it up. Only really good if your parent is heat aware and understands it may be too hot but really really good if they knock cups over as it won’t spill.

"Which",the Consumer Association, tested flasks earlier this year. It recommended Thermos King Stainless King Flask. It kept hot drinks warm for 24 hours. It holds 1.2 litres and has a twist and pour stopper so you don't have to take the stopper out. Perhaps your mum could manage that. It's not the cheapest ( aim for around £20) although it does come in very pretty colours. It also recommended Pioneer Stainless Steel flask as a good buy. Target price about £15. It has a button operated lid which might be easier for you mum. It holds one litre and also kept the water hot for 24 hours. I think I'd get two. I'd hate to be limited in the number of hot drinks I could get a day.

My contigo cup keeps my drinks hot for hours. I have to leave the lid off for a while to be able to drink it!

shedevill · 28/01/2022 20:45

I love my Vango flask, it's pretty cheap too and keeps water boiling hot for hours!

shedevill · 28/01/2022 20:46

Oh, but it is a screw one

SuffolkBargeWoman · 28/01/2022 20:48

I second @JohnLapsleyParlabane
Those thermos cups are incredible!!

Hohofortherobbers · 28/01/2022 20:50

Remember those self heating ready made coffee in a can ? You pressed a button and the contents heated up? I must admit I haven't seen them for sale in a while but I will off and Google now...

Crowdfundingforcake · 28/01/2022 20:51

Glass lined thermos flask. Asda have them for less than £10. Pour a bit of boiling water in flask and swish round, tip out and fill with coffee.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 28/01/2022 20:53

What about a breville hot cup. Someone else could fill up the reservoir and then she can just press the button when she wants hot water.

Clementine8 · 28/01/2022 20:55

Try the SHO coffee cup. I have the bottle and that keeps it warm all day for me. That has a screw top but the coffee cup may be doable for her.

pinklillie · 28/01/2022 20:58

My grandma uses the breville hot cup too. It's brilliant. Holds 1.5 litres and dispenses hot water instantly

The only type of flask that I've found that keeps drinks/soup truly warm is a glass walled thermos type vacuum flask, like this one -

www.therange.co.uk/cooking-and-dining/kitchen-accessories/food-storage/flasks-and-thermos/thermos-mondial-flask/

You could maybe try this one, with a cup/mug as it looks a bit nicer for beside her bed -

www.robertdyas.co.uk/thermos-carafe-white-1l

Other flasks that are stainless steel lined I find do not keep drinks warm for long enough, even if you put boiling water in them first to warm up. Although the glass ones are a bit more fragile, they are much more effective at keeping heat.

soontobeamama · 28/01/2022 21:11

Just noticed that you said that a screw top is no use, so in that case the carafe would be better - it even mentions the one handed design.

I have this one. It keeps my coffee piping hot for a whole day or over night.

It’s my favourite possession!

Scotinoz · 28/01/2022 21:14

What about a Thermos pump pot? They’re lever action.

You could just fill it with hot water and she could do her own tea in the morning so it’s fresh, or it’s be hot tea in the morning out the pot of not

LaBelleSausage · 28/01/2022 21:18

Filter coffee machine with timer function? I'm sure mine was only about £40
