Hello,

I keep being told about interesting podcasts and I'd really like to get into them. The only problem is, I don't know what to do with myself when listening! I used to listen while I drove which was fine, but now WFH means I hardly drive anywhere anymore. I tried while cooking, but found I couldn't concentrate on both.

I could try listening while crocheting to keep my hands busy perhaps?

Any tips appreciated, as well as recommendations of podcasts please (would be great if you could add a sentence saying what its about).

Thank you!

What are your interests? Are you looking for something factual or fictional? So many to choose from.

I've been listening to Archive 81 which is a horror story podcast, it's been adapted for Netflix (would also recommend the Netflix series!)

I listen while hoovering or cleaning or putting out the bins or sorting washing. Boring stuff!
Also great for gardening, or if you happen to need to paint a room or sort out a cupboard.
Do you walk much? Lovely to make a dull trip to the village shop more interesting or the way back from the school run

I really like Elizabeth Day’s ‘How to Fail’ podcast. She talks to different famous people (all of whom are successful in some way) and they discuss how their various failures have helped to shape who they are. It’s often funny too.

Recommendations:
Theres a podcast section on MN in film and tv. Lots and lots of suggestions there. Here are mine:

  1. My dad wrote a porno. Comedy.
  2. Fridag night comedy from BBC.
  3. Serial - true crime told VERY well
  4. S-town. Mysterious almost crime made by same team as 3.
  5. Toxic the britney spears story
  6. The adoption - one familys forced adoption story beautifully told.
  7. The dream - MLMs
  8. The coming storm (about the storming of the capitol)
  9. Noble blood - about royals and nobles through history (good for falling asleep to)
10. Hidden brain - social psychology 11. unfinished - s1 about lynching, s2 about fundamentalist mormons in utah 12. Mumsnet AIBU - v funny 13. You're wrong about - debunking all sprts of stuff (Stanford Prison experiment!) 14. Stonewall. Nolan investigates. About the reach of Stonewall. 15. Seriously. Mish mash of small documentaries. 16. Griefcast. Comedians talking about grief and death. Feels like free fun therapy. 17. Joan and Jerricha. 2 women talking absolute FILTH in the guise of agony aunts. So misogonistic its funny (no really).

And if anyone here is Danish or understands Danish then I de forkerte hænder fra ekstra bladet. About a psychologist being less than ethical in his dealings with social services.

I listen whilst cooking, cleaning, folding washing and gardening.
At the moment i like a slob comes clean which spurs me on to declutter, adam Buxton and crime junkie

wendz86 · 28/01/2022 22:02

I go on a walk during my lunch break and listen .

UnicornPoopsRainbows · 28/01/2022 22:20

I’ve always got one on now. Or an audiobook.

Wake up, ask Alexa to play something for 10-15 minutes. Making tea. Tidying up. Doing my hair and make up could be a good 20 minutes to listen. Sometimes I just sit with a cuppa or a dog and play one.

BIWI · 28/01/2022 22:21

I listen to mine in the car, and also (via my headphones) when I'm doing the shopping. Or if I'm walking anywhere.

MinglingFlamingo · 28/01/2022 22:27

Something Rhymes with Purple- Giles Brandrith and Susie Dent talk about the origin of words.

Shagged Married Annoyed with Chris and Rosie Ramsey.

No such thing as a fish

I struggle to work out what to do when listening as well. I often get distracted and start reading something or doing something else and realise I've missed a lot. The only time I really listen is when I walk back from nursery in the mornings after dropping DS off. It makes it slow going...

In terms of recs, I'm just finishing The Coming Storm which is a BBC podcast about QAnon and the Jan 6 storming of the Capitol. Absolutely fascinating.

jackiebenimble · 29/01/2022 08:29

I do whilst walking mostly. I understand where you are coming from with cooking. If its tried and tested fine but not if i am following a recipe or doing sth complex.

Also when doing anything tedious. Sorting laundry. Cleaning, housework etc. It just makes it more palatable. Wrapping christmas presents. Decluttering. Ironing.

LoveMae · 29/01/2022 21:50

Thanks for these, very useful!

I listen whilst out for a walk, driving or doing boring house chores like cleaning, sorting laundry, etc. I also often listen to them slightly sped up so I can get through more podcasts in less time!

A couple of my favourites are:

How to fail with Elizabeth Day
Happy Place

It would also be wrong for me not to mention my own podcast: Mums' Night Out - the podcast equivalent of a therapeutic catch-up with your Mum friends over a glass of wine (or two!!) I also have little mini 5 minute episodes to listen to in those tiny gaps you get between all your Mum chores!!

Milomonster · 01/02/2022 12:42

Before bed, car, walking, driving.
Sweet Bobby - about cat fishing. Quite extraordinary.
This Jungian Life - I can’t emphasise enough how much I love this. It’s my companion. Three Jungian analysts discuss all kinds of topics through Jung’s work.
Alone: A Love Story - journey of a single mum to find love. She has the most mellifluous voice.
Modern Love - a series of personal essays published in the NYT related to issues of love. It’s very moving.
Sorry about the kid - about the loss of a child. Not for everyone.
