What’s something you buy which is cheap/basic that is really good?

Mine is bars of unscented soap from (predictably) Aldi, and also Waitrose own salt and vinegar crisps.

What gems are in your life?

@SomewhereOnlyIKnow

Dove Shea butter soap is lovely, but I can only get it at Sainsbury’s now.
They do it in Bodycare!
Gilead · 28/01/2022 17:23

Aldi eye shadow collection, naked dupes. As good as Naked but 5.99!

@Lampzade

Astral moisturiser. I have extremely dry skin and used to pay a fortune for expensive ‘ hydrating’ lotions. Most were crap Started using astral and my skin looks great. May not work for everyone, but it worked for me.
Nivea products are as good as expensive ones. So is Dove body wash.

Sitting my laptop on my lap when working home alone (I sit in an armchair with a pouffe rather than at a desk to make this work). Discovered by accident that I then don’t need to put the heating on - the heat from the laptop keeps me very warm!

spinachandchickpea · 28/01/2022 17:27

Not exactly answering the OP’s question there, but within the spirit of the thread I think

toppkatz · 28/01/2022 17:32

Aldi extra mature cheddar. Although the Co-op one is very good too.

EmergencyPoncho · 28/01/2022 17:35

Just ordered some Astral! I love the Aldi serum in the white box, my mum has expensive tastes but is very happy with their caviar skin cream. My DS eschews Peperamis in favour of Aldi Meatsters.

Malibuismysecrethome · 28/01/2022 17:35

Packs of frozen croisants, pain au chocolate or cinnamon buns are really good value and taste lovely for a couple of quid. Not so economical if you only heat one at a time though.

TheresSomebodyAtTheDoorNeil · 28/01/2022 17:38

Maggi curry noodles.

Four packets for £1. Stick some left over chicken or prawns, a load of chilli, spring onions and and egg on top and theyre just stunning. I buy up dozens of packets for lazy ramen.

Tesco limescale remover makes my kitchen sink shiney

notordinary · 28/01/2022 17:39

@JackieWeaversZoomAc

Soda crystals - put a spoonful in with every load of washing in hard water areas.
What does it do?
cherish123 · 28/01/2022 17:43

Tinned fruit

mamaduckbone · 28/01/2022 17:47

Lacura Q10 day and night cream from
Aldi - I have super sensitive skin and can't use any fancy face products. This works a treat, has SPF and is less than £2 a pot!

Museumland · 28/01/2022 17:52

Aldi candels....just over £3 and feel like a luxury item.

I've been using astral for as long as I can remember! I love it too, now my daughter uses it

Own brand washing powder in huge cardboard box. Aldi or Morrisons.
Bar soap since lockdown.
White vinegar for cleaning.
Tim’s of chick peas, butter beans etc so versatile, healthy , filling and sooo cheap.
Lacura skin care.
The ordinary skin care.

Benjispruce5 · 28/01/2022 18:02

Aldi champagne. £10 and delicious.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 28/01/2022 18:02

Asda "Shades Power" kitchen roll. Far stronger than Plenty and cheaper too.

@spinachandchickpea I agree with the warming effect of a laptop Grin

Sainsbury sell Jam n Cream biscuits which are far nicer than a Jammy Dodger.

Also Sainsburys Baked Beans (turquoise label) multipack are way cheaper than Heinz and much nicer.

BlueFlavour · 28/01/2022 18:05

@Gonnagetgoing
Yes I would have thought so. You could fry onion, carrot and celery, then add bag of frozen broccoli, top up with stock cube dissolved in hot water, then add Stilton and cream/milk if you fancy it at the end. Takes 10/15 mins and is really nice.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 28/01/2022 18:08

Sainsburys or Asda Zinfandel Rose (in the box) works out at under a fiver a bottle. Just as good as Echo Falls, Blossom Hill or Gallo according to DH

Reviewer123456 · 28/01/2022 18:10

Aldi deodorant. I tried it once as I noticed it was about 65p, I would not use anything else now. Plus, it does not leave white marks on clothes.

Squiz81 · 28/01/2022 18:13

IKEA potato ricer. So much better than using a masher.

Lovecatsnonstopbutcanthaveany · 28/01/2022 18:16

I'm a perfume snob and I always have to have branded one, expensive ones like Dior or Chanel etc.
However recently I found out Superdrug own line called Artiscent.
They have an exact ( I mean literally exact dupes for Chanel Chance, Dior Coco, Chloe, Tom Ford for about £9.99 for 50ml bottle.
And sometimes geese are kn the offer for half price.
I bought every of them and getting rid of the branded ones.
Also there are free of animal testing and don't make me ill in regard of wheezing etc ( some designer one make me wheezy)
Absolutely bargain.
Also Nexts ones are great too.

RunningFromInsanity · 28/01/2022 18:19

Sainsburys basics Ketchup.
Better than Heinz

Beginit · 28/01/2022 18:21

Cheap dish detergent for unblocking toilets. Pour liquid in, let sit for an hour and then flus

All waitrose own brand products except their eggs (DH is fussy)
