So, this is on behalf of a relative. If you've earned less than £1000 from self-employment, are you still able to pay National Insurance for the tax year?

You can pay voluntary class 2 contributions is that what you're asking?

AdoptedBumpkin · 27/01/2022 21:14

Sort of, but I think they want to pay Class 2 as they are cheaper.

Not sure I understand the situation. What other class do they think they should pay? Class 2 is what I wrote? Confused

AdoptedBumpkin · 27/01/2022 22:59

Ah, sorry I understand my mistake now. Grin I guess they'll have to pay voluntary...

When you complete your self assessment tax return, it asks if you want to pay voluntary class 2, it's very easy.

MummaMeerkat · 28/01/2022 06:42

If you earn under £5000 you can choose not to pay the the voluntary class 2

Wfhquery · 28/01/2022 06:52

Yes you can pay the class 2 if you have a self employment, it is cheaper than the voluntary class 3 for non self employed

madisonbridges · 28/01/2022 06:54

The NI person I spoke to said that if you earn just £1, you can pay NI for that year.
