How do you get through life with your period?

(I know this may sound dramatic to some who don't suffer with the symptoms as badly. )

I have been off work for a few years because I have had children, and now thinking about returning.

My question is, I don't remember how I got through full time work when for 1 week before my period I am suffering from extreme emotions, crying at everything, irritated and snappy. Then my period is about to start and I can't stop farting (sorry) and then it starts and I get diarrhoea for a few days, of course with heavy bleeding, cramps etc.

I know so many people will say just get on with it. But how do you manage at work like this?

I have always suffered with this so it's not new since children. I just can't remember how I functioned at work, or if I even did. (I do remember spending a lot of time in the toilet and feeling embarrassed- not confined toilets)

I'm on the pill (cerazette). But I'd like to know how the hell to explain it to my DD so she knows what to expect without freaking her out.

I used to be like this. Recently had the coup removed and I don't seem to get it as much now. Only took 40 years...😕

The biggest thing for me was the utter exhaustion and emotional state. I have always working full time though. The main thing for me was knowing it was coming. I was really tuned into the date so I could mentally prepare myself. I have myself a break during those days. Worked slightly shorter hours, slept a bit more where I could. I think sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves to be ok ALL of the time.

Have you seen a doctor about it? I did once and they talked about me taking AD's during that week. I didn't go for it in the end but it may be worth you having a chat with them xx

I take the mini pill. I haven't had a period in 8 years. Godsend.

Finding a pill that you get on with can help massively. And have you ever spoken to the GP about the possibility of endometriosis?

But also, now I'm older, I just told my new boss that I often struggle on my period (no more details given) and they immediately told me to use the disabled loo if I wanted (game changer, because the regular loos are mixed sex). In terms of emotional symptoms, I do find it easier to just keep a lid on that at work than at home (which makes me feel like a horrible mum!)

One of the biggest problems is that idea that women are just supposed to put up and get on with it without even mentioning it so I completely understand your dilemma. Getting enough sleep, painkillers and eating healthy help me get trough but my symptoms aren’t as bad as yours and I would consider taking the pill as a solution in your case.
