Would you wash a cashmere scarf?

Manufacturer says itโ€™s dry clean ๐Ÿ™„

Would you risk it in the machine on a wool cycle with Woolite?

Iโ€™d wash it by hand.

Wonโ€™t take you more than ten minutes max.

DaveGahansRealWife · 26/01/2022 10:32

Hand wash always and you can do a quick spin.

PinotPony · 26/01/2022 10:35

No. I washed mine on a low setting and it still shrunk.

Will a hand wash def be safe?

I hand wash all my cashmere. Tepid water with a small amount of Woolite or similar. On NO account use any fabric conditioner, it matts the wool.
Gently squeeze the fabric, until you can see in the water that it is clean. Rinse with tepid water, gently squeezing again. Bring it out of the water gently squeezing to get rid of the excess.
Then roll it in a towel, as if it is a Swiss roll. This will absorb the excess moisture. Dry flat away from direct heat. Depending on the texture of the scarf you might want to lightly iron it on a low heat.

I normally wash cashmere on the wool / handwash setting in the washing machine and itโ€™s fine

Only time I had one shrunk was when DH put it in a normal wash by accident

Divebar2021 · 26/01/2022 10:42

Does it actually need washing? You should try and limit how often you wash it so Iโ€™d steam it and spot clean as a first choice.

TrashyPanda · 26/01/2022 10:42

Yes. It will be fine.

It is the agitation that shrinks wool.

Warm water, and soap in the sink, give it a few gentle squeezes.

Then rinse, again squeezing gently.

There is zero need to dry clean cashmere.

Cashmere is very durable. No need to limit cleaning it, as long as you do it gently.

I do mine on the Wool setting in the machine but is it knitted or woven?

Fleur405 · 26/01/2022 10:53

I recently washed my big cashmere throw on the wool cycle (because I spilled coffee on it ๐Ÿ˜ฑ). I put it in a big net bag as I have it in my head it reduces how much the throw gets agitated around It was totally fine.

LaBellina · 26/01/2022 11:17

Itโ€™s totally fine to wash cashmere by hand.
I even put it in the machine in a washing net but if you want to be 100% safe just wash it by hand. The only advantage of dry cleaning is that it will not be as wrinkly as when you wash and line dry it yourself.

Itโ€™s knitted, very soft. I have cashmere jumpers that I wash on the wool cycle and theyโ€™re fine. Iโ€™m just a bit cautious about this scarf!

No no no no! DH has twice washed my cashmere jumpers and they've come out like dolls clothes.
