What do you eat if you're trying to lose weight?

I've managed to lose all of 1lb in almost three weeks so feeling a bit despondent.

So, do you eat in a way if you're trying to lose weight? Any tips appreciated :-)

No breakfast, carrots with hummus and fruit for lunch. Normal dinner. No cakes, crisps, chocolate etc

itsutterlyshit · 25/01/2022 21:57

Calorie count. You don't need to deprive yourself of anything but you'll be more mindful of what you're eating.
Log every single thing you eat and drink.
As long as you're in calorie deficit you'll lose weight.

Obviously it's better for you to eat nutritious balanced healthy meals but you could eat 1500 (for example) calories of pizza and still lose weight as long as that left you in deficit.

Eat more mindfully too. Eat slower you'd be surprised that you might stop eating before you've actually finished your plate.

I'm sure it's 3500 calories to lose 1lb of fat.

I started this 3weeks ago and I'm 8lb down. I'm also not snacking between meals and making sure I drink plenty water too

No processed foods, cut out refined grain products, limit sugar, eat lots of fibre and at least 30 different plants a week.
Calorie measurements on foods are not reliable as they don't take into account the calorie consumption that is required for the body to assimilate them. Plus with a lot of high fibre foods such as nuts, more is never digested. It isn't the case with cake or chocolate which are quickly and easily absorbed and low in satiety

@UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea

Your approach seems a bit haphazard. How much weight do you have to lose?
I agree, it is.

I haven't a clue what I'm doing.

I'm currently 11st 1, BMI 28. I would like to lose 1.5 stone

I've cut out virtually all sugar and any refined carbs. Sticking to a strict 1000 calories per day, comprised of lots and lots of M&S ready-made salads, various fruit and soup. And I only eat between midday and 6pm.

It's working like a charm. Have lost 10lbs since Jan. 1st 😊

Dillpickles · 25/01/2022 22:07

WRT how active I am, not very.

I get my 10k steps in twice a week when I do my shopping and nursery run, for the remainder of the week I don't get much exercise at all.

I know that weight loss is something like 70 percent diet and 30 percent exercise so I do need to move more, it's just difficult to get out with 3 young children age between 3 months and 4 (one is disabled)

Maltesers and green Pringles, unfortunately. I can't recommend it in terms of success.

I used to eat a full share bag of dairy milk buttons per night, then cookies when I wake with the baby Blush

@Dillpickles honestly, pick up a set of kitchen scales the next time you're shopping and give calorie counting a go for a good few weeks. It soon becomes second nature to weight stuff out.

Hoolihan · 25/01/2022 22:13

No breakfast, no lunch, no snacks, normal dinner. Gallons of tea and water. Works for me.

Bunce1 · 25/01/2022 22:14

dill I bet you’re lifestyle is far from sedentary with 3 children!

However, I think some hardcore exercise will give you the kick start you need. Good for you mind body and soul.

Even a you tube 25 min class before the school run?

Good luck.

DisneyBaby · 25/01/2022 22:16

If I'm on a serious weight loss spell before a big holiday or whatever I will have;

2/3 pieces of fruit for breakfast, sometimes add a little yoghurt if I fancy it

Salad or soup for lunch (no bread or pasta etc)

Small dinner with minimal carbs for dinner

A piece of fruit for dessert if I'm really craving something else...

To lose weight fast, I think you should go to bed feeling slightly hungry!

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 25/01/2022 22:29

There's a lot of quite extreme dieters on this thread!

Cutting out as much refined sugar, alcohol and processed food as possible.

Eating more vegetables and protein than carbs. Don't skip meals but keep an eye on snacking, especially late at night.

Tracking your calories. Every single thing you eat and drink.

Lots of water and up your exercise.

Should pay dividends.

Hippophile · 25/01/2022 22:35

I only break my fast at 11am
Stop eating at 7pm latest
Steel oat porridge with no cal maple syrup
No bread
Bfree wraps for lunch with some sort of veg and protein, a little vegan mayo
An apple with some almond spread
Home made fajitas, non dieting DH has lion’s share, I have small portion
Two squares of dark chocolate

I cook everything from scratch, eat the same as DH so that we can eat together despite the fact that I’m dieting and he isn’t (lucky sod) I’m 47, peri meno and on hrt so have everything going against me in the weight loss stakes but I can lose weight if I put my mind to it.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 25/01/2022 22:37

Have a look at the Why we eat (too much) thread on here, it's based on the book of the same name. We're now on thread 5 so I advise you to search for the first one.
The fundamentals are; no wheat, no sugar, no seed oils (use olive oil or butter) eat protein, lots of vegetables and fat. I started eating this way and was amazed how full I felt and how quickly I lost weight and I didn't have a lot to lose either. Good luck!

Hippophile · 25/01/2022 22:37

That should be steel cut porridge. Steel porridge would break your teeth

SarahJinx · 25/01/2022 22:38

Really you’ve got to cut our fat and sugar and REALLY limit things like bread and crackers. You can get by with rice and pasta and potatoes as long as they aren’t cooked in oil or fat. Lean meat and veg or salad you can eat as much as you want really. Likewise fish. Drop the toast, and the crackers. Make yourself a massive salad with chicken or fish. Swap to red milk. Loads of water. Bread is just the devil.

I’ve lost almost four stone in the last six months.

To me it sounds like you're starving yourself then eating crappy stuff when you do eat. You must be eating more than you think you are if you're not losing weight because your description sounds barely enough to feed a fly. Have you always had problems with weight and eating? It sounds a bit disordered and I'm not trying to be mean I'm wondering if you might be worth contacting someone who could look at the whole picture with you?

Lookingoutside · 25/01/2022 22:49

TorySteller

‘The only way to lose weight is to eat in a calorie deficit.

You can calculate your TDEE online - this will tell you how many calories you should be eating per day to maintain your current weight. To lose weight, eating in a small deficit (eg 200 calories less than your maintenance) will ensure that you lose weight.

Up your protein intake too, and do some activity - walking, weight training etc, if you’re able to.’

It’s this.

A few crackers and some milk in your tea are not the problem. Intermittent fasting could be making you very hungry and therefore you may be eating more calories than you think.

Low carb works for me. Bread makes me literally swell up now, and chronic inflammation in the body is so bad for health. And low carb means I can still have lovely things like cheese and cream which really fill me up, keep blood sugar steady and stops me snacking. Carbs make me hangry.

Lookingoutside · 25/01/2022 22:51

P.S. Bread is not the devil🙄 If you like bread you can have it.

Silversprinkles · 25/01/2022 22:51

BIWI's bootcamps here on the Weight Loss topic got me started years ago. Fell off the LC wagon for a while but started again and can already see and feel the difference.
