Anyone have a Murphy bed?

Asiama · 24/01/2022 19:01

Our family has grown and we no longer have the space for a guest bed, so we were thinking of getting a Murphy bed - a bed that folds up against the wall when not in use (about 45 weeks of the year). Ideally I would like one that converts to a desk when the bed is not in use but they are really expensive!

Does anyone have a Murphy bed? Anything you would recommend? Not recommend? Anything we should consider before buying one?

Here's an example of one we are considering:

I've got one from London Wall bed company,

It has made a huge difference in my ability to accommodate guests comfortably.

They've discontinued my model but it looks like a wall unit with shelves/ cupboards which rotates through 180 degrees when you open it and then the bed folds down. Called swivel. Other manufacturers sell similar ones.

I love the look of the Study Bed but very pricey! If you have space for a single bed I'd probably go for an Ikea daybed that looks like a sofa but has the second mattress underneath to make a double bed. A Murphy bed is definitely a neat solution though.

I have this.

We’ve got a study bed and it’s really really good

Motherhubbardscupboard · 24/01/2022 19:34

We also have a Study Bed. Took us a few years to decide to go for it as it is very expensive, but the way we looked at it was it was far far cheaper than moving and our son's room was otherwise not suitable for a teenager.

broccolibush · 24/01/2022 19:35

We have one from StudyBed which, whilst eye-wateringly expensive, has been one of the best furniture purchases I’ve made for our flat.

Our study/spare room is tiny. Only 4’11” wide and it was useless before we got it. We effectively used it as a cupboard. Now it’s used every day, and has been since I bought it in late 2018. It was my study for admin/campaigning work before lockdown but when lockdown came it was taken over by DH as my “work” isn’t full time or nearly as messy or noisy.

One thing that’s marvellous is that we can keep the bedding on/in it when it’s in desk mode. So I don’t have to find somewhere to store a duvet and pillows when its not a bed, as I would with a sofa bed.

I’m so evangelical about them that several friends have bought them and are very pleased. They, like I, love that the turn the spare room into a multi-functional space, and that you don’t have to clear the desk to turn it into a bed.

They do discounts if you’re introduced by someone who already has one - if you want one then feel free to PM me for an intro (I get a little cash back too).

broccolibush · 24/01/2022 19:37

Oh for an edit button. In that vast screed I failed to say the one thing that made the purchase make sense for me. The £££ spent gave us a useable room, so I could justify the cost as adding a room rather than buying a bed.

fallfallfall · 24/01/2022 19:42

I’ve got a queen sized one. Purchased from Costco the online section. We had a cross beam inserted in the wall to brace it properly. And dh along with a carpenter apprentice set it up. My friend bought hers from Costco as well had difficulty setting it up and Costco sent over a very very fit man who was a pleasure to watch work I’ve been told.

This company have lots of different options.

I remember looking at them over 10 years ago, and it doesn't look like the website's changed much since then. No idea of the cost, I never ended up buying anything, but was impressed by the designs.

This website might be a bit better.

We had a study bed for our spare room that we were gifted second hand. It was brilliant! Unfortunately, when DD2 arrived, we had to pass it on as we didn’t have space to store it until DD1 is old enough to use it.

Asiama · 30/01/2022 19:02

Thank you everyone for your messages! I had a look at Clei and Boone but couldn't find anything suitable. London Wall Bed was super expensive. I really like the study bed but it's still quite a bit of money. @broccolibush I will PM you for the referral code, thank you! @fallfallfall do you happen to know of the name of the Costco bed? I can't find it.

We had another look at our room and think if budget really becomes an issue, we could possibly have a wall bed and a separate desk, so we haven't discounted the La Redoute bed yet. But if anyone has any other wall bed recommendations then I would love to hear them!

I’m not seeing them :(
Must not be available

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 30/01/2022 19:07

You could try doing what my friend did. She found a second-hand study bed on eBay but then paid the study bed company to check it for her once she'd installed it

HedgehogintheFog · 21/03/2022 10:10

Hope no-one minds me resurrecting this thread! Long story short, we need to turn our spare room into a multi-use space.

We were thinking of one of those day beds that converts into a double, but my brother has one, and it's not ideal (either DH or I always end up in the gap between the mattresses when we stay!) so I've been looking at Murphy beds.

@Asiama did you end up buying one?

@MauveMavis @broccolibush @BeingATwatItsABingThing @Motherhubbardscupboard @EnjoyingTheSilence

Are the ones you have easy to put up and take down? Can you it with bedding on? I also notice a lot of them say 200cm x 140cm which is bigger than a standard UK double? Does anyone have one of these with a standard double mattress on it? I don't really want to have to buy another mattress on top of a pricey fold up bed!

Any replies much appreciated, sorry for piggybacking on someone else's thread!

Motherhubbardscupboard · 21/03/2022 12:30

Mine is a standard single and the bedding stays on it when it folds up

MauveMavis · 21/03/2022 13:12

Lots of the beds are European which is why they take a European mattress.

Most Come with a mattress.
I’d worry if you had the wrong size mattress it would move around or leave the metal frame exposed at the side.

Mine folds up with sheet /duvet on. Pillows can be secured on the underside of the frame when it is folded.

Asiama · 26/03/2022 13:20

Hello @HedgehogintheFog we didn't go for one in the end. There were a few reasons. We need to put a computer monitor on the desk and our 20" monitors are too tall. It also felt like a lot of money to spend on a piece of furniture that we may not need in the future. We bought a sit stand desk for £130 and have accepted that we will put up with the bed being in the room. It's actually turned out better for us as we can sit on the bed and watch films on our computer.
