Hello. I've always been slim but since starting esctilopram in May I've noticed my weight has increased and I've got a strange belly saggy fat thing happening! Anyone else had this? I was on fluoxetine for years and this didn't happen

Hi yes same happened to me but apparently they don't cause weigh gain so I haven't been putting it down to that. I never gained weight before in my life however so it's very coincidental if it's not the escitalopram!

Hmm, they haven't caused weight gain for me. I'm on 10 mg, perhaps it depends on the dosage? Is it significant weight gain? I can't advise on the saggy belly issue, mine hasn't taut since having a nearly 10 lb baby. Grin

I've gained alot of weight. My tummy wasn't taut either since having my 3rd big baby but it's alot bigger now... sigh. Have you been taking them for long @Cameleongirl? I'd love to know if it's the cause for me

I've been on escitalopram for over 15 years and it's never affected my weighr

ColonelHaiti · 24/01/2022 21:47

I've been on them since May 20mg. Cutting them down so hopefully it'll help the weight. I was skinny after having my baby 4 years ago so it's not baby weight

When I queried this with my insufferable GP, she told me sarcastically that it doesn't cause you to put on weight, but it can increase your appetite as a side effect. According to her, eating more is what makes you put on weight, and the drug itself doesn't eat for you. Helpful Hmm.

Cameleongirl · 24/01/2022 23:50

@randomjo I was on them for nearly two years, came off for several months and then went back on last July as I was struggling. I may have gained a couple of pounds but nothing significant, plus I'm in my 40's so it's easier to find extra weight nowadays. Smile

It might be worth asking to try something else, OP and randomjo, it may be that Escitalopram isn't the best fit for you? I couldn't get on with Sertraline, for example.

Im reducing them slowly. I've struggled to get below 10 stone when I've been on them. I don't know if its age as I'm 35 now and have pcos aswell although always been slim.
