Taking myself on a (solo) "date" - ideas?

This Friday I have a day off work and nothing to do. Kids will be at school and don't require any input from me (teens). So, I am free from 8am to late, if I so choose!

I'm determined not to fill my free day with boring life admin or housework. So, was thinking I could treat myself to a solo "date". Has anyone done similar and can share their feedback? I'm also very keen for ideas that people think would be fun to do alone.
(I'm near Glasgow, if anyone else is near there and has venue-specific recommendations.)

I have considered the below as options but feel a little unimaginative. Maybe I'm putting too much pressure on myself Smile

  • cinema
  • lunch out somewhere, doesn't need to be fancy I really* fancied roller skating but the only one I can see in Glasgow is only open in the evening and is sold out this Friday
  • nice drive, lots of lovely scenery around. I do this a lot though so wouldnt feel very special, I dont think.
  • Could hop on the subway and have a wander around the West-End, go to the museum etc

What a nice idea. How about the art gallery? have a wander and go in the cafe. Or you could do a day trip to Edinburgh, look round the new shopping centre and the museum, have lunch there.

Personally I would check into a spa with treatments and lunch. Take myself away from the world for a bit.

A matinee at the theatre? It can be cheap to book one last minute ticket (a rush or on-the-day ticket?)

Madickenxx · 24/01/2022 16:44

I do this a few times a year when I feel I need space. My favourite is a spa day with one or two treatments as it gives me plenty of relaxation time but the treatment / lunch breaks up the day a bit. I have also done champagne afternoon tea followed by the cinema. You need to be comfortable eating alone for afternoon tea as you do get some funny looks (more so than in a restaurant) but I bring a book and just smile when someone's looking lol.

Other things you could do.....shopping, art galleries, museum, a national trust type place, coffee and cake with a book. Pretty much anything you'd do with a friend really. Enjoy!

I love taking myself out! I sometimes travel with my husband when he works abroad and love spending the day on my own.
Things I like doing:
A day out in a city, I go to a museum/gallery then take myself for lunch.

Take myself to the theatre
Do a big walk, either in the countryside or a city
If I’m at home I drive the dogs to the Lakes or the Peak District, do a big walk and pick a really good foodie pub for my dinner.

I've just remembered I was gifted a £40 voucher for a local Italian restaurant at Xmas, so I think a trip there would be good. The voucher would pay for a whole 3 course meal which would be lovely! Hopefully won't be too weird for me to dine there alone!

Cinema idea is out - I checked the timings and there's only kids films on during the day Confused

Spa day is definitely up there with my idea of a good time but I have a family spa weekend planned for the not-so-distant future. Will probs just wait for that one. Two is too luxurious Grin

I would 100% do a spa day

Drive to Largs. Get the ferry over to the islands - either cycle around Cumbrae or go for lunch on Arran.

Or look around an art gallery and have lunch there.

Try on some clothes you'd never normally wear from a boutique you'd not normally walk into.

Get hair and/or nails done.

FFSjustLTB · 24/01/2022 17:37

I love Kelvingrove and could spend a while there.

SpinningBob · 25/01/2022 20:33

Wouldn’t there maybe be a film on at the GFT? I saw that the Sharmanka theatre down at the trongate had opened again, if you fancy something different?!

Icantremembermyusername · 25/01/2022 20:41

Breakfast out.
Hair, brows and lashes. Nails too, if that's your thing.
Nice lunch after purchasing a book.
Try on clothes you wouldn't normally wear. Perhaps buy.
Cocktail or two.
Home to read book.
Get kids take away for tea (with sides you can nibble).
Watch a film YOU want to watch. Tipple of choice. Bed.
I am VERY jealous!

endlesslydoingdishes · 26/01/2022 09:33

@Icantremembermyusername That sounds like a blissful day. Bookshop and posh coffee sounds like something I could definitely do.

@SpinningBob Ooh hadnt thought of the GFT - on my way to google and see what they have on!

Ok; I think I have my plan!

  1. Head into Glasgow City Centre and wander round the shops and visit the MoMA
  2. Book a table at the nice Italians I have a voucher for. Free 3 course lunch!
  3. Watch "Belfast" at the GFT.
  4. Have a wee drink at a nice cocktail bar
  5. Bus home and PJs on!
