Tissue paper that's duvet thick

Please stop using it .
Our terrace communal drain has blocked again. Waited all weekend for the water board to come and sort. It was a soft blockage. Basically your posh bog roll. It doesn't dissolve the same way the 2 ply does.
So because of people liking thick, soft toilet paper , my garden had to be power washed.
You're wiping your arse people! You're literally flushing money down the toilet!
I don't normally bang on about stuff like this , but having my neighbours peppers and mushrooms floating in my back yard .......🤢

That's disgusting

drinkingwineoutofamug · 24/01/2022 11:04

And toilet wipes don't bloody dissolve either.
Omg it stank. I couldn't let me dog out all weekend , which was fun

Had this when I tried Andrex quilted. I had to get a plumber out, and ditched the rest of the pack.

Yes, if I put anything other than 2 ply down my loo, it ends up getting blocked. The quilted stuff should just be banned, it is a menace.

StarlessSea123 · 24/01/2022 11:31

Recently I ordered the usual 2-ply in online shopping and it’s been substituted with luxury quilted type, returned to driver and they looked at me a bit baffled as to why you’d return it when it’s the more expensive option, but it was for the exact reason you mention above, to avoid blocking drains!

0blio · 24/01/2022 11:31

I agree OP. We have to use the cheapest 2 ply too or the drains will block and as my house is on the end of a run I'm responsible for paying to have them cleared at £140 a time!

MouseyMoose · 24/01/2022 11:36

I feel your pain too OP we are in a basement flat and have no end of problems so have no choice but to use 2 ply.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 24/01/2022 12:11

I've been to all the neighbours, they knew about the blockage. Told them what it was. We are 3rd house from the end so had 4 house hold worth of sewage, bath water, washing up etc floating about in my garden 🤢My man hole actually lifted if someone flushed their toilet etc.

As I understand it, once the run includes more than your own waste you are not wholly responsible. It is either a public or private sewer. Even if it is private, if the blockage is beyond your private use then the cost is shared.

Private Sewers
If your property and those of your neighbours all share the same pipe, it’s a 'private sewer'. If a private sewer gets a blockage, every household that uses it should share the cost of having the blockage cleared. If there’s a dispute over who’s responsible and it’s causing a problem, contact your local Environmental Health Officers (EHOs).
They have the power to serve a notice on everybody using a private sewer, ordering them to have it cleared within 48 hours. If an agreement still hasn’t been reached and the sewer is still blocked, the EHO will make arrangements for a private contractor to clear the sewer and will bill everyone involved – this is called 'works in default'. www.problemneighbours.co.uk/problems-with-drains-who-responsible-for-what.html

Thanks @drinkingwineoutofamug I'll have a look at those. In the past I've hosed it but it's a bit hit and miss if it works.

I had a private company out to do a survey @NannyGythaOgg and they put a camera down which showed a narrow pipe on our side (expensive to fix of course). This agreed with the water company's findings and unfortunately we are liable. However I haven't really had problems since using the 2 ply and having fewer people living in the house (another good reason I'm single now Grin)

emmathedilemma · 26/01/2022 15:22

YANBU!
Ditto wet wipes, face wipes, cleaning wipes, cotton wool pads, cotton wool buds, sanitary products, nappies, condoms, facemasks, dead goldfish and cucumbers (yes, cucumbers but that's another story!).....

drinkingwineoutofamug · 26/01/2022 15:24

It's pissing me off that's it's been a common occurrence. We are the last house on the flat , next door is higher than us, so every time it backs up, floods my garden with shit. Now no why my dog was vomiting 😠

I work for a water company, wipes are the big bugbear we have, though you would be amazed what people flush away!

the mantra should be that only the 3 p's should be flushed, poo, pee and paper - generally there should be no issues with any toilet paper, however if you have a problem with the pipes such as oblio's narrow pies then that is unfortunate but i can virtually guarantee that otherwise someone is using wipes - flushable wipes are not flushable and do contribute to soft blockages!

Confuzzlediddled · 26/01/2022 15:38

oh and as your garden was affected you can ask for compensation from the water company, this will be half your sewerage charges back for each occasion that you have been flooded - as long as it is has been in an area the water company is responsible for, in your case it is as you are not the only person on the line - the information above about a private sewer is outdated, in 2011 the water companies took on responsibility for shared lines.

Thank you for that information about compensation. They hosed the patio area but I've had to go out and scrub it as toilet paper and carrots stuck in the cracks 🤢 Absolutely grim.

That's what I thought was the case but checked with google and that's where I got my information. I'm glad I was wrong.
