Looking for reassurance!

Hello,

(Warning as this is a bit gross, includes graphic description of injury)

Looking for reassurance especially from anyone with medical knowledge!

On Friday evening I spilled boiling water over my breast (including nipple). Its quite a big area. It hurt a lot and blistered that night.

The next day the blister on my breast had burst and it was still hurting a lot so I called 111, particularly worried about the nipple as I'm exclusively breast feeding.

They told me to go to the walk in, where a nurse had a look and cleaned and dressed it. He also called the burns unit about the nipple but they said he was fine to just dress it as normal.

At that point, the nipple was slightly blistered but hadn't burst. When I changed the dressing today, all the skin came off so half the areola (not the middle bit that sticks out) has gone Sad

What Im worried about is will it definitely grow back as nipple skin and not skin skin? Will it grow back with the little holes in where the milk comes out? I know this probably sounds really stupid but it looks awful.

I'm going back tomorrow to have it checked for signs of infection, but in the meantime can anyone reassure me that the nipple will recover normally (assuming no infection etc)?

Also I've been advised not to feed from that side, how long would it typically take skin to recover from a bad scald? I'm hand expressing but it's not emptying the breast.

Thanks Smile

It will grow back as nipple skin, just as, if you burn inside your mouth it grows back as mouth skin.

Not sure how long it ill be before you can feed from that side again though. I depends on how quickly you heal - and it will probably still be tender for a while, once it is healed.

@NannyGythaOgg oh yes, that's a good point!

Thank you, hopefully it will heal quickly. Being so full is just about as painful as the burn!
