I'm putting the heating set at 20 all night .. will this work?

Normally heating goes off at 8pm. Set to come on just before 6am at 21. However it's been freezing in the mornings as we have loads of windows. It seems to take hours to heat up and things feel damp and cold underfoot in most rooms. Last night DS woke complaining he was cold in his room and DD also woke.

We usually have the window open a tiny slither for air to come in anyway, but our room is much warmer than the kids due to the position.

So tonight I'm leaving the heating running all night and hoping for no night wakings. I'm also hoping if the house stays warmer I can get away with running it at 20 all day rather than 21/22. Maybe wishful thinking that?

I have a smart meter so will see if it's costs loads more? 🥶

Says it's 4 degrees now outside, forecasting a low of 2 degrees.

Get those thermal fluffy fleece duvet covers....we got some...so warm now...have to kick if off sometimes...no heating on at night either.

TheSmallAssassin · 23/01/2022 00:25

And why have it go off at 8pm, what time do you go to bed? I'd say keep it on 'til an hour before you go to bed. Feeling colder is a signal to your brain that it's time to sleep.

Bakewelltart987 · 23/01/2022 00:31

The window being open only a tiny bit is what's making it so cold. Close the window heating on low I'd say 16 just to keep the chill off. I wake up all stuffy with blocked nose if heating on when I sleep.

Fleecy fitted bottom sheet and pillowcase similar to @earsup suggestion keeps my kids feeling cosy. Feels warmer on skin than cotton.
Also read earlier that someone puts hot water bottle in middle of bed with pillow on top shortly before bedtime and then when getting into bed moves water bottle to feet and pillow to head so whole body is toasty warm - I thought it was a great idea and will be doing it here.

Redglitter · 23/01/2022 00:34

I'd hate to have heating on overnight. My heating isn't as high as 20 during the day. Does seem mad though to have the hearing on and the windows open.

Piggyk2 · 23/01/2022 00:38

Try fleeced bed sheets. I think you need to have your heating turned on earlier in the morning if your house takes a while to warm up. Keep the windows closed overnight.

silentpool · 23/01/2022 01:44

I have brushed cotton sheets, electric blanket, flannel pajamas and layers - lighter wool duvet plus blankets so I can regulate my temperature. I think heating overnight would cost a fortune.

I tend to sleep with the window open all year round but just a crack open - too stuffy otherwise.

If it gets damp, I bring out my dehumidifier - if you stand it next to the laundry rack, it will dry that as well.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/01/2022 02:07

Look at reducing the amount of heat lost through the windows. Thicker curtains, secondary glazing or temporary solutions, Google for ideas.

Utilities are going up in price and there's also the environmental issue. Hopefully the higher prices are going to prompt more people to reduce excessive energy use. Rather than heat your house all night, use more bedding and have it come on a little earlier in the morning.

Billandben444 · 23/01/2022 07:12

If the thermostat is set at 18 and the heating doesn’t come on when the temperature is 2-4, there’s something wrong with the thermostat
The 2-4 degrees is outside not inside.

ElftonWednesday · 23/01/2022 07:22

Our heating is on until about 10pm.but always off overnight.

Ovenaffray · 23/01/2022 07:27

Keep the heating on later and shut the window.

I’d try that first.

Also where is your thermostat?

Get one of the ones - not necessarily a hive one - that you can take from room to room and it heats that room to the temp. Like this www.screwfix.com/p/flomasta-emp914arf-wireless-digital-thermostat/249jk

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 23/01/2022 07:28

We have one child in a room thats colder than all the others. We have a Dyson fan heater in there that has its own thermostat, so when the rest of the house heating turns off, the standalone heater detects that it's still too cold in that one room and kicks in.

Svara · 23/01/2022 07:32

How late is your daytime heating on until? Could the house not be dropping below 18 where the thermostat is? Are you sure it's on at night? Mine has an allday setting but that means it comes on for the usual hour in the morning then stays on in between then and when it is set to come on at 5 to 8pm, but then still turns off at night. Do you have warm pyjamas and winter quilts?

FindingMeno · 23/01/2022 07:47

I keep the windows slightly open because of damp issues.
We're poorly insulated and no double glazing so it soon gets cold, regardless.
I'm worried about the energy costs but it helps keep a house full of asthmatics healthier - I've tried and tested my way of doing things and it works for us.
19 at night. 20 in the day.

TeachesOfPeaches · 23/01/2022 08:02

Hot water bottles do the trick. Heating in all night seems a very expensive solution

beanbaghashtag · 23/01/2022 08:03

Thermosat in kitchen on outside wall but tucked in the corner, can't move it about.

We have double glazing, blinds and curtains in all 3 bedrooms. Although curtains not thermal.

Apparently insulation is fine had s company out to do more and said it wasn't needed. House however will get boiling in summer too.

The only room the window is open is our room and that room is much warmer than the kids two rooms.

Some other windows in the house only have wooden shutters and they aren't the warmest as drafts. This house has so many windows considering it's relatively small, 3 bed.

I'm on a budget yes !!

You can swap the thermostat for a simple moveable one - it’s not expensive to do.

Why do you put your heating off so early at night? The temp will be dropping by 8.30 - I’d try glee ping if on til 10 and bring it on half hour earlier before you start leaving it on all night.

Ovenaffray · 23/01/2022 08:09

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 23/01/2022 08:11

Your budget won't last long if you're heating the house to 20 at night Shock. The keeping warm suggestions above are mch more sensible

DepthOfTheAbyss · 23/01/2022 08:19

Higher tog duvets for your dcs and fleece pyjamas.

Forrandomposts · 23/01/2022 08:29

If your thermostat in a kitchen (which is usually a cold room) on an outside wall is saying it's not dropping below 18C I'm not sure how it's so cold the kids are waking up?

But either way I'd just have it come at earlier in the morning and put warmer bedding/blankets on their beds. Electric blankets are also a godsend if they're old enough!

ElftonWednesday · 23/01/2022 08:31

The kitchen is not a cold room.

00100001 · 23/01/2022 08:32

Your house must be like walking into a sauna at 21° 🥵

megletthesecond · 23/01/2022 08:33

Mine is on 20° 24/7. I sleep better when the house is hot.

SheWoreYellow · 23/01/2022 08:33

@ElftonWednesday

The kitchen is not a cold room.
Ours is, it’s got no radiator in. First thing you don’t have the oven on or anything.

Not everyone has an aga you know.
