Council tax bands? Why are we paying more on d than people who live next to us? All the same size houses?

What on earth is going on?

Victorian terrace houses?
Now the houses next to us have loft rooms, two bathrooms etc?
We have been on d for years?
Dh said according to valuation now its correct but was based on 1991 prices??

@OnTheBenchOfDoom

Thank you.

Apparently this was soley based on property valuation from the 1990s? That's what dh said?

We are all in standard same ish size houses but I would suggest ours is definitely the smallest way up and way down due to no loft rooms or extensions out back??

Everyone else has gone out and or, up.
Confused

Dh said based on property value now, it would be correct band and its likely our neighbours would go up.

Do you know the wording or how to challenge it.
I feel pretty pissed off that we have been paying more for 14 bloody years!!!

@JanuaryBluehoo I think Martin Lewis has the best advice on this including a check list of things to look into.

@JanuaryBluehoo, when I challenged my Council Tax band I rang the Valuation Office for my region, and followed up with a letter, but now it looks as if yiu csn do it all online Challenge Your Council Tax Band

I had my band put down on appeal. Was given refunds for every over payment made for 5 years, all as individual cheques!!

JanuaryBluehoo · 26/01/2022 19:25

Individual cheques??

I appealed ours and got my whole block moved down a band. I got a nice cheque for £3500. It took a bit of work but it was so worth it.

03000 501501 is the VOA helpline. Otherwise www.gov.uk/contact-VOA will get you all the information about how to challenge your band. The onus is on the CTax payer to provide the supporting evidence for the VOA to consider the proposal.

thegcatsmother · 26/01/2022 20:06

You also need to remember that a D can range from £68000 to £88000 at the time the bands were set, so a £20k difference. We bought in April 1992, so the VOA has a benchmark in my purchase price, irrespective of other properties.

My house and the other 5 houses on the link have 2 bedrooms, originally Band B but with the Council tax reshuffle were put up to Band C.

The 6 houses opposite separated by a path have 3 bedrooms and also Band C. The Council said tough luck when it was queried.
