Please recommend a skincare routine for my dd...

My DD is 11, almost 12, and currently uses just a face wash. She has 5 tiny blackheads on her chin and wants to start cleansing, moisturising etc.
I'm abit clueless as to which brand we should look at etc. Can anyone offer some advice?
She has fairly sensitive skin.

It's not very exciting perhaps but I find gently "scrubbing" with a flannel wrung out in hot water is really good. It opens the pores and exfoliates the skin. Then rinse with cold water to close the pores and rinse off dead skin cells.

I found simple to be great through my teen years. Affordable, available in the supermarket

Maybe start her on a face wash, and moisturer twice a day and maybe thr toner if she is dedicated. Then one/twice a week a use a scrub but as @painterinperil said a fannel does wonders if sometimes seen as a little old fashioned.

Look at La Roche Posay or Sam Farmer products. I'd keep it simple with just a cleanser and moisturiser. I agree that if she washes her cleanser off with warm water and a face cloth rather than just splashing it off with water she might find that helps with the minor blackheads. If that doesn't clear them completely she could try a product with salicylic acid such as La Roche Posay's Effaclar Duo (it's gentle despite the mention of acid), that's good for getting rid of spots and blackheads.

I would recommend Cerave. We all use it in our house, including both teens. They do a cleanser with salicylic acid which is great for spots. Rub in to skin and wipe off with a clean flannel and follow with Cerave moisturiser. Its £10ish for a fairly big bottle and often on 3 for 2 in Boots or sainsburys.

Please don’t let her use scrubs or exfoliators. They encourage the skin to produce more oil which won’t help at all. Just a simple cleanse and moisture routine will be enough to look after her skin at her age.

I agree, nothing more needed at 11.

Great thank you! She's recently started using a flannel for her face wash as she was only using it in the shower before so that should help. I'll show her the brands you've all recommended too and will see what she'd like to try, thanks Smile

You don't need to scrub at your skin with a flannel to make it clean. It's actually quite damaging especially for young skin. Just Pat or gently wipe your face. A nice gentle cream cleanser or ones specifically for young skin are good. The vitamin E range and the simply pure range from Superdrug are both really nice and gentle. They do a full range of cleansers through to serums and moisturisers. I like the simply pure hydrating serum especially.

Whatever you do, don't encourage her to use face wipes. Hideous things for skin and the environment.

Her face won't be damaged by a flannel

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 21/01/2022 22:33

The Superdrug vitamin e range is nice and usually on offer Smile

A good routine (for boys and girls!) is to get in a habit of washing their face to remove sweat/dirt etc which just water doesn't do, and also using SPF

Pixi glow range. My teens love it!

NoEffingWay · 22/01/2022 00:01

Clinique face wash
Lancome moisturiser-they do a great one for young skin
Facial to clear the blackheads

QuizzicalEyebrows · 22/01/2022 05:01

They all use Cerave SA which you can buy in Boots or Superdrug with a clean flannel.

They also use Garnier (pink lid) micellar water with a cotton pad

Avarua · 22/01/2022 05:52

No to,
Wipes of any sort
Clearasil (too harsh)
Scrubs
Pore strips

Yes to,
Soap and warm water
Flannel
A light moisturiser with SPF. La Roche Posay would be a good place to start.

Avarua · 22/01/2022 05:54

Start her off with solutions that are zero plastic waste and not single use (eg instead of single use cotton pads use a flannel or reusable pad). Start good habits early. We don't need another generation of rampant plastic consumers.

My dd is 11 and uses tea tree facial wash and toner, and the seaweed moisturiser. Her skin was getting a bit greasy and it seems to be working well.

flashpaper · 22/01/2022 07:43

We use cerave in our house. It's really gentle on my 11yo skin.

Warmduscher · 22/01/2022 07:46

How is her diet? Is she eating enough vegetables, is there enough fibre in her diet, does she drink enough water?

It’s not always enough to just deal with what you see on the surface.
