Why do I sometimes get so excited by life...

And the wonderful and endless possibilities it offers. And then get bogged down again and end up doing the same things day after day, year after year!

I even get excited about pretty banal stuff like getting the house tidied up, it's all great in my head but somehow never comes to fruition.

I don't get why my brain does this?

Anyone else?

What sort of things are you thinking?

I see things on YouTube like people renovating a house mostly by themselves and learning all these new skills and I think Wow! I'd love to do that! But I overthink everything and know in reality it would be a disastrous idea for me.

Something a bit more achievable- I want to overhaul our family diet. It's not awful but it's not a wide repertoire. I want it all changed NOW and I find baby steps hard, even though I know it's prob the best solution. And in the meantime we continue to eat the same stuff over and over because I know the kids will eat it.

Ive resigned myself to "once I get to X stage then I can do something new. Now's just not the right time." But not sure if that time will actually ever come!

So, on a large scale I think about travelling to remote places and living there for a little while (not forever) long enough to take in the culture and the different way of life etc. Realistically I can't do that because I have a young family but the idea of it still gets my pulse racing!

And smaller scale I am with you on the food thing. I wanted to get some postcards, put recipes and ingredients lists on them and pick some out at random with the kids to plan a weekly shop/meal planner. I couldn't find any postcards so I have never done it. The kids were so excited about the idea of it too. So we just eat the same old stuff, usually struggle to find what I need in the fridge/freezer/cupboard because it's so disorganised. I'm just a bit crap really!

That cooking one does sound like me! You are looking for optimum when good enough is....good enough! So...what if you just go to the library together on Monday and pick a kids cookbook up, pick one recipe they are excited about and go straight to the shop to buy ingredients, and make it?

If they like it, then figure out where to write it out. Tbh an A4 page could be better! Postcard are annoyingly small

Everyone is like this a bit I think
The road to heaven is paved with good intentions

musicalfrog · 23/01/2022 06:41

Yes perhaps this happens to us all. I just never hear anyone else talk about it.

Thank you Ed. Yes we do recipes quite a lot, my kids love cooking. They do alright I think, but I never think it's good enough. That's definitely a common parent theme!

Your ideas seem very high/hard to achieve, so it is unsurprising you don't achieve.

I think setting the right level of target is key to success!

So why not plan to cook one lovely meal, the random meal planner sounds like huge stress.

musicalfrog · 23/01/2022 07:41

We do lovely meals every once in a while, I think I'm just trying to aspire to something a bit greater, something different, more of an organised system.

It's only one example though, so I don't want to get caught up on the food issue. It's so much more than just that.

I know exactly what you mean though I feel life is very humdrum sometimes I want to make bigger changes and in my bed at night imagining I can but then in the light of day can't manage it

If it is broader, maybe you are over-facing yourself, maybe really you are fine as you are, or maybe you genuinely have a problem with procrastination/self-sabotage.

I actively decluttered/downscaled my life and it made me feel so much better, so I went the other way!

I guess it depends what youa re trying to do and why?

Opus17 · 23/01/2022 16:38

I feel like a lot too. With most things. We live near the Alps and we plan to go hiking every weekend in spring and we've only ever managed once or twice.
This year we've done it differently to make it more realistic. We've booked one weekend away and chosen two more hikes. So instead of "all spring" we'll have 3 times at least and that's more manageable.
But yeah, I get like this with a lot things too.

Toanewstart22 · 23/01/2022 16:40

I’m the same

Let me guess. You don’t suffer from anxiety and depression and generally a very optimistic person? That’s me.

musicalfrog · 24/01/2022 23:25

Yes @Toanewstart22 you are definitely onto something there!!
