When do you eat when the DC are out late?

DD9 has just started a new activity. She is out 1740-2030. We used to eat at 6pm when DH got home but that has shifted closer to 630-7pm due to other activities in the past couple of years.
Do you wait snacking until everyone is in? Or feed the activity child earlier before they go even if 5pm is a bit early and messes with cooking?
Eat and save some for her to eat alone when she returns?

Depends whether having a full stomach would be a problem with the activity. Scouts = eat early, swimming club = snack and eat properly later. It is a bit of a pain.

I would probably do a quick easy to prepare dinner for the nine year old around 5pm ish, and then maybe a snack/supper when they get home if they are hungry.

So your DD doesn’t get her dinner until 8.30? Seems a bit late. What time does she go to bed? I would feed her at 5 and save DH’s for later.

What time does she go to bed?
Usually 8pm! This is all about new to us... it's a sporting activity rather than scouts, so involving running around.

I would do an easy dinner at 5pm for all the kids (jacket potato and beans, pesto pasta, something like that) and then I would eat later with DH once all the lifts were done with. Unless I was starving and then I'd eat with the kids and DH would make his own dinner later.

I wouldn't want the faff of substantial snack for one child at 5pm, then diner for most at 6pm and then reheated dinner at 8.30 for DD. That would feel like the cooking was never ending!

Depends on the activity
Wednesdays are nightmare evenings, where I leave with DS2 at 5.45, DH feeds DS1 and himself then drops him off at 7pm. I get back with DS2 at 7.30, and feed the pair of us. DS2 gets back at 9.30. We tend to have something like pasta with a sauce I've cooked earlier in the week, and reheated in batches.
I think you will need to try both eating very early and eating very late, and let DD tell you what is best for her. DS2 feels really ill if he eats before his Wednesday activity then runs around.

We resorted to school dinner on karate day, then chips about 5 (karate at 6) and a small meal when we eventually got home about 8:30 (adults would eat substantially then, which was a good time to have something they didn't like).

Caspianberg · 21/01/2022 17:48

I would just do something easy to reheat that day like sausage casserole.
Daughter eat a portion at 5pm
You all eat 6.30/7pm as usual
Daughter has snack like cereal/ toast when back if hungry

gogohm · 21/01/2022 17:59

I altered dinner to suit - for choir we ate at 5 and left exh's in the microwave, for sports we ate at 8 and I tried to make sure it was something out the slow cooker so quick when we got home

AddingMustard · 21/01/2022 21:32

Hmm so DH came in around 645, looked super annoyed at the oven - I assume because dinner wasn't in it.
Half an hour of silence (whilst I prepared it) and he suddenly asks DS where his sister is! He had forgotten she is out late. And Dd refused to eat when she came in so that answers that question!
