Yes! Wonderful show like many of that era.

Apileofballyhoo · 20/01/2022 21:25

I remember, and even older, The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin I think it was called.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/01/2022 21:26

Yep!!!

I used to watch it with my dad. There was something a bit risqué about watching ITV!

RonniePickering · 20/01/2022 21:27

Love it, especially the one where he fasts 😂

My grandad used to have a squeaky chair he called the CJ chair

I know it’s of it’s time but the jokes around racism are excruciating.

MiladyBerserko · 20/01/2022 21:36

Hated it
Creepy, unpleasant and cringey were my childhood views of this show.

GoodnightGrandma · 20/01/2022 21:38

Yes, I used to watch it.

The joke is on Rigsby. He’s a mess.

’A deeply flawed and complex man, Rigsby projects himself at once as both superior and inferior to those around him. His insecurities tend to lead Rigsby toward bigotry, and an obsession with status sees him at once look down on the student, and look up to the 'African Prince', Philip.’

Pondtoad · 20/01/2022 21:42

Yes. I watched an episode of Reginald Perrin on you tube quite recently. Nothing changes in the world of work.

absolutelynotfabulous · 20/01/2022 22:01

Me too.

Mainly for Richard Beckinsale. Blush

NoLongerTroels · 20/01/2022 22:11

I used to watch it, I was nearly a teen and got most of the jokes. I thought he was a bit creepy. I also vowed never to move into such awful digs ever once I was of age.

Yes he was lovely. So sad he died so young.
Justleaveitblankthen · 20/01/2022 22:12

I had a crush on Richard Beckinsale. I must have been about five at the time 😅

beccahamlet · 20/01/2022 22:13

It points fun at racism. Yes it's cringeworthy, but the jokes are on the racists.

Another Richard Beckinsale fan here. Not to mention a young and handsome Don Warrington.

I felt exactly the same!

You don’t think in any way that it gave the racist jibes a platform? We were meant to feel fondly about Leonard Rossiter’s character as a buffoon.

I do agree that it had some very clever writing and was extremely well acted. Just wouldn’t work on any level today. Lots of creepy, cringy bits.

beccahamlet · 20/01/2022 22:46

@AtlasPine
I think that's a very valid point. But on balance Rigsby ends up looking like a nit. Philip in contrast seems intelligent, sophisicated and dignified.

There was a Rising Damp documentary and Don Warrington who played Phillip made exactly these points. Phillip was by far the most sophisticated, intelligent character in the show who made Rigsby look inferior and exposed him for what he was. In a humorous way.

dingledanglewoowoo · 20/01/2022 23:00

I must have seen repeats as a child as it was on TV between me being 0-4! But I remember Rigsby being an idiot, and Philip's silky smooth voice.

We love watching Death In Paradise with Don Warrington as the commissioner.

Hellocatshome · 20/01/2022 23:04

Hated it first time round very creepy and unpleasant and racist.

ANameChangeAgain · 20/01/2022 23:14

I'll still watch it if its on. The racism was done in an anti racist way. The type of things Rigsby was saying was poking fun at what I was hearing a lot of people saying at the time, old male relatives who have long since gone. Behind door racism was very common during the 70s and 80s and Rigsby's character was making fun of these attitudes. At the same time I remember the younger generation, my siblings, cousins and I arguing with and challenging the attitudes, like the two young men.

I used to watch this with my parents. It was funny but the racism was really bad.
