is my aunt being ripped off ? g plan or mid century furniture is "worthless" furniture

Hi all
My aunt is clearing a house for an elderly relative. She has been told the attached furniture is "worthless" and she has listed it in Freecycle. There has been a lot of interest in some of the pieces and my worry is that she could get something in eBay or the like. Would you be kind enough to have a quick gander and see if giving it away is the right thing to do. Thanks

Is it actually G Plan? ie displaying a G Plan label?
Only Ercol and G Plan appear to be desirable, perhaps some McIntosh

Muchtoomuchtodo · 20/01/2022 21:52

We thought my DaF had some things that may have been of value. We got a trusted house clearer in and they let us know what they thought was worth approx £100 or more.
In the end it was a complete pita trying to sell things so we ended up offering them on the local FB page for a donation to charity. Far less stressful.

I have a load of Ercol furniture that I cant sell because its the dark wood, even though its solid wood and beautifully made.

G plan and ercol are both worth quite a lot!

BloomingInformation · 20/01/2022 22:08

@thereisonlyoneofme really? I’d be interested if it was online at the right time.

Same here, got a few pieces of Ercol, really lovely condition and I know someone who sells furniture for a living, he didn't want it because it's dark wood. Too hard to sell.

YuleiamsaidI · 20/01/2022 22:17

I would love to have any of those pieces!

RaraRachael · 20/01/2022 22:25

When my mother died she had a lot of that kind of furniture. We had to give it away for free in the end. It didn't matter what price we asked, nobody was interested. Shame because it had cost her many hundreds of pounds in the 70s.

nancy75 · 20/01/2022 22:28

Generally it’s the light & mid wood that is worth more, the dark wood is not nearly as popular or valuable. There is lots of it on eBay for silly money & lots of it has been unsold for months.

betwixtlives · 20/01/2022 22:31

They’re lovely!

MauveMavis · 20/01/2022 22:32

It's really hard to realise the value from 70s furniture when clearing a house.

I also cleared a house full of it and was told to put all the furniture (some with receipts from Heals and a great pedigree) in the skip.

I gave a lot of it away as I couldn't bear to skip it (unfortunately none o fit would fit in my flat - although I do have some wardrobes from a different relatives house).

The difference between the prices you get offered second hand vs. the prices they charge on vinteriors/ chichi london shops is massive.

Hopefully by the time we clear the next 70s mausoleum I'll be well settled into my mid century modern dream house and can take the dining suite....

HeadPain · 20/01/2022 22:33

See Facebook group "vintage, mcm furniture and curios uk". From what I've seen in there, it's not worthless

2022HowDoYouDo · 20/01/2022 22:37

I wouldn't get your hopes up too high OP. Apart from the sideboard I don't think there's much value there.

UnicornPoopsRainbows · 20/01/2022 22:41

Stick the photos into Google lens and you’ll find what they’re selling for online. Is this the sideboard? www.poolbankinteriors.co.uk/products/gplan-sideboard-e-gomme

IWasFunBeforeMum · 20/01/2022 22:41

Sell it! The vintage g plan etc is worth lots!

ZeeSideSeaside2 · 20/01/2022 22:43

You could put them into a local real auction, with a reserve price
You would need someone to take them physically to the auction site

It’s a different colour wood, the colour makes a huge difference to the value

HyacynthBucket · 20/01/2022 22:50

This is mid-century and desirable. I particularly like the table. The furniture looks like teak (an endangered rain forest tropical wood), so please sell to someone who appreciates it, and does not try and paint them especially the table with its beautiful wood. The coffee table could be renovated by a buyer so that the top looks better. Who ever said its is worthless does not know what they are talking about. Hope you good homes for it. I agree with the person who said to photograph the shelves in good light and without the contents.

saraclara · 20/01/2022 22:51

But are they in good condition? The high prices are for pieces that have really been looked after and in pretty mint condition.

Most people who actually 'live' life, don't end up with pristine furniture five r six decades later. It's like the people who sell vintage toys that have never been taken out of the box. I mean, what's the point of a toy that stays in its box for 60 years?

ESGdance · 20/01/2022 22:54

I like the purple glass vase and cord footstool in the bottom left hand corner of the middle photo in the second set of photos. Also in that cabinet I spot a Queen Mother mug which might be of interest to royal collectors.
