Period help (sorry for the TMI)

My periods are fairly short, they last around 36 hours, but it's like an open faucet. I can't really complain as once it's gone, it's pretty much gone but I stain everything and have to get changed every 2-3 hours, and my poor bed is always left like a crime scene. Would period pants be absorbent enough? Currently I wear tampons and pads.

Switch to a mooncup, along with period pants designed for heavy flow. The combo is much better than tampons and pads, which were crap for me too - couldn't manage the school run of less than half an hour total.

GoodnightGrandma · 19/01/2022 10:40

At bedtime you’re better with two nighttime pads lined up from front to back.
Period pants don’t cover the whole area.

ofwarren · 19/01/2022 10:41

Mine are horrendous too, especially in the night. I can't use moon cups or tampons so have ended up using the large tena lady pads that go right up the back at night time and it really works. The absorbancy is much higher up the back then, where my main leakage is in bed.

Of course adult nappies, I always forget about them, but at least at night should make a difference

I haven't leaked at night at all since using an incontinence pad. The blood used to pool in my vagina and when I sat up it would flood everywhere. The pad now absorbs it and I'm able to get to the bathroom to sort myself out.

Onlyrainbows · 19/01/2022 10:55

That's exactly what happens to me ofwarren it's absolutely horrible

I am similar since having children. I'm guessing it's because my uterus is efficient at evicting things now.
I switched to period pants. I use Wuka super heavy flow ones and I do need to change them maybe 3 times in the daytime (they're supposed to last 12 hours) but no more leaks even if they feel a bit full by the time I change.

YukoandHiro · 19/01/2022 11:19

I get the flooding too but have never had a leak with Wuka super heavy pants (they're not that cheap though).

I used Tena incontinence knickers for post partum bleeding and I would be tempted back to them if I got any heavier.

36 hours is really nice and short. I reduced from 7 day to 4 but the first 2 are absolutely brutal

The duration does the matter, with periods this heavy you need to see a doctor with a potential referral to gynae. They will help make your periods manageable.

I get so cross when I hear of women living with such heavy periods because they feel they have no choice. This is absolutely one of those times where you seek medical help.

Onlyrainbows · 19/01/2022 11:46

Bobbie I've asked countless times (and I'm under strict regular checks due to severe anemia) - but because I only bleed for such a short length of time, and I never finish a packet of pads/tampons the total volume is still average or even below average. It's just the shape of my uterus.

They do!! My periods are horrendous since my miscarriages. I even gush through maternity pads. I've tried doubling pads up, putting 2 pads in to ensure full coverage, laying on old bath towels, puppy pads the lot. But I toss and turn that much I either end up laying on the bed sheets or move the pad and Leak through it. I got a pack of adult nappies not really expecting much but for the first time in ages I was able to sleep comfortably without ruining yet another pair of knickers, bedsheet, duvet cover, or mattress protector. The first time I did also pop a pad inside them but now I don't bother

@Onlyrainbows I would try writing to a gynae consultant directly and asking them for help/advice as you're desperate.

Also look up Dr Anita Mitra (the gynaegeek on Instagram) - she sets out to share lots of helpful info for women with overlooked issues.

Onlyrainbows · 21/01/2022 13:48

I've spoken to various consultants of different specialties. I've seen a couple (or more) of gynaecologists, they keep a close eye on me because I'm severely anemic. The conclusion is that a) what happens to me is not considered heavy bleeding, b) my tilted uterus is to blame for "pooling" the blood. On Tuesday I was desperate, yesterday I was on a pantyliner that I wore all day and today I'm not wearing anything. It literally just lasts about 10hrs and then it just goes away.

Have you ever tried tranexamic acid? I started taking it as my iron levels were very low and my hair had started falling out do to very heavy periods. My periods are still on the heavy side but so much more manageable.

Even if you’re only having short periods that level of blood loss can’t be healthy and it impacts everything else in your life. Maybe try getting another opinion.

My blood pools as well. I won’t bleed during the night but when I go get out of bed and stand up it all comes out in a rush.
Onlyrainbows · 21/01/2022 14:03

Bluetongue all doctors I've seen add up how many pads/tampons I go through. I only need about 4 pads 2/3 tampons throughout my whole cycle. According to everyone I've seen that's below average, and I do believe it, it's more annoying than anything else!

OP posts:
ofwarren · 21/01/2022 14:16

How do you find out if you have a tilted womb? I've had 3 kids so is it something that would have been picked up then? I have the pooling issue too so I'm just curious.

mrsnw · 21/01/2022 14:20

Ladies I assure you you will not leak through if you wear Tena pants. I use the high absorbing ones. It is not sexy wearing a nappy in bed but I sleep and do not turn turn the sheets claret!

Onlyrainbows · 21/01/2022 14:55

It was first noticed when they couldn't get out an IUD (had to do it under general anaesthesia). Later on when I had my second it became problematic too (I also have a massive bladder but that's a different story).
