Taking 6yr old DD to London

DD is turning 6 next month and is obsessed with the musical Six, so I've booked tickets for 23rd Feb. Planning on turning it into a 2 day break as a birthday treat but unsure of where to start in terms of planning our itinerary..

Any wise folks got any good ideas on where to start and what not to miss? She's already been to Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace on a day trip last summer so maybe not there.

I’m surprised that it’s considered age appropriate for a six year old really.

Shapiro · 19/01/2022 09:50

The show is recommended for ages 10 & up. Children under 5 are not permitted in the theatre.

Tower of London if she’s interested in Tudor History though surely?

Good job she'll be over 5 then 🙂

Depends a bit on how good a walker she is - I’d err on more breaks rather than less.

Southbank can entertain DS5 all day - there’s the Tate, London Eye and aquarium within about 10-15mins walk of each other, plus the Southbank itself is nice to walk along, and there are plenty of food places, and covered areas to sit and rest (National Theatre has a lot of public areas, as does Royal Festival Hall and National Film Theatre). St Pauls is just across the river on the wobbly bridge. Big Ben and Tower Bridge are in sight, if she’s very keen you could head over to one of them, probably a bit far to do both.

Day 2 maybe Natural History Museum or Science Museum? Or Tower of London if she wants to see some Tudor history?

What sort of budget?

I really want to take DDs on the Horrible Histories River cruise.
They love a trip to the Lego shop.
Natural History Museum and Science Museum they like, but hate the crowds.

Got to be the Natural history museum and science museum surely? British museum also fantastic.

CarButtonCloth · 19/01/2022 14:11

Agree with Science Museum. DD also used to love Transport Museum in Covent Garden at that age, although it's not free.

Go on a river cruise from Westminster pier - it's about £11 and it's great. See loads of sights but saves their little legs.

I also suggest Tower of London. V reasonable and child friendly I took the dds when they were 5 and 8 they absolutely loved it. Even just seeing the Ravens up close is great. Dd2 chose it because we watched Gangsta Gran, I'd never seen the friend jewels before either I was a bit in awe since you have to stand of a travelater to view them. Honestly it surprised me how much we enjoyed it.

Tower of London fits so so well with Six doesn't it. Can't fail!

Comefromaway · 19/01/2022 14:25

Not sure I'd take a 6 year old to see Six, Catherine Howard's song especially is quite hard hitting, seeing something live/staged you get more of the sense of what it is about that purely listening on an album where it likely goes over your head.

Theatre Cafe for a drink and a cake is always nice. M & M World, Lego shop, Southbank area or a trip on a riverboat along the Thames.
