What's the surgery for?
Will you have a general anaesthetic or local?
I had a total knee replacement a few months ago and of course it was absolutely ok.
I'm sure your op will be too but it's natural to be nervous, and scared.

TerriblyNaice · 18/01/2022 23:58

Bless you. I'm holding your hand Flowers

Just remember you’ve just got to get through tonight and a bit of tomorrow and it will be done and you can focus on recovering. It must be important if it’s not been pushed back in the current climate so hopefully it’ll be a big relief to have it done.

I know it’s easier said than done but try and get some sleep. If you’re exhausted it makes anxiety worse. Have you got a comfort tv show you could watch to take your mind off things?

Good luck 👍. I'm sure it will be fine.

I don’t think it would be normal to not be scared to be honest. But surgery has never been safer than it is these days, or anaesthetics better. My friends partner is an anaesthetist and from what he says everything is so controlled and every possible thing anticipated beforehand. Before I knew him I thought they gave you the anaesthetic and then sat twiddling their thumbs while the surgeon did their stuff. But they are constantly monitoring and adjusting everything . He says it’s really really safe. This time tomorrow it will be behind you. It’s absolutely normal to be apprehensive at the very least though. I hope you sleep tonight but if not try listening or watching something to distract yourself. I’m holding your hand too 💐

ABitOfAShitShow · 19/01/2022 00:14

Don’t be scared! If it’s a general, you’ll be going off into a lovely sleep and waking up to people looking after you. If it’s a local, ask for some good sedation and you won’t remember anything. I think I’ve had 7 surgeries now (one quite big) so you can trust me. Smile

Wishing you well!

StopStartStop · 19/01/2022 00:17

Wishing you all the best. I'll say a prayer - can't do any harm.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 19/01/2022 00:25

If it's any help, I have loved general anaesthetic when I've had it! Like a lovely warm fuzzy feeling and a bloody good sleep. Sending you a hand hold Thanks

I had my first GA for a life-changing op at the age of 42 and was incredibly scared. Two things helped: my mother had had hers at the age of 86, and got through it and recovered well, even though she was very frail. I told myself I wasn’t going to be outdone by my Mum!

Talk to the medical staff in the morning about what’s worrying you: is it the GA, the procedure, any side-effects from the op, the stay in hospital, the recovery, concern about pain relief? Mine was over the anaesthetic and the anaesthetist was sorry I had bottled up my concerns till the day, as she was able to put my mind at rest. Lovely nurse held my hand and chatted to me as I was being wheeled along and asked me all about my family, which made me think of happy times and relaxed me before the GA. No side-effects from the procedure and it did change my life so much for the better in a way I hadn’t anticipated. I hope the results are as good for you. Handhold forwarded from that kind nurse all those years ago, and post back to tell us how it went. Flowers

Thank you all so much for replying.

Didn't manage to get much sleep but I'm waiting in the hospital now.

I'm having a general for an inguinal cyst in my groin. X

I hope they get you in to surgery soon and you have this done and dusted. Tell the staff you're scared. It helps that they know so they can put you at ease as much as possible. They'll be very used to people being everything from a bit nervous to full on terrified. Hope all goes well and your back on here posting it was nowhere near as scary as you'd thought it would be

ronaldweasleyy · 19/01/2022 07:52

@Leonthelobster

Thank you so much. Just had the nurse round and apparently not many in today so shouldn't be too long. Currently sat in my gown waiting. Not cried or had a meltdown yet so I'm very proud 😂 x

Good luck OP. You’ll be grand. Smile

FuzzyPuffling · 19/01/2022 08:00

Another spot of hand holding from me. I hope all goes perfectly today and you are soon on the road to recovery.

BlueSky8 · 19/01/2022 08:01

Good luck op!

Different but I had a D&C, first time being put to sleep, I was shitting it so wasn't take enough big breaths in. He said one big breath please, and I remember the start of the breath then nothing after Smile was a pretty good sleep!
Hope all goes well.

RedMozzieYellowMozzie · 19/01/2022 08:06

Good luck op! I had surgery a couple of years ago and I was scared but the general anaesthetic was a breeze!

ronaldweasleyy · 19/01/2022 08:13

You are all comforting me so much. This is exactly why I come to Mumsnet. Thank you so much everyone xx

Ah OP - I was exactly the same a few years back. Had a GA for removal of polyps from my uterus. I cried going to theatre and felt so silly given what a quick and easy op it was. So I completely get the anxiety OP. Was home eating pizza the same night. Even managed a glass of wine as I recall!

Oilyoilyoilgob · 19/01/2022 08:24

Aw I hope you are ok reading all the lovely supportive comments-you will be absolutely fine and from today you’ll be recovering and healing-what a result!

Slightly different but I have huge medical and health anxiety and cried getting ready for my egg retrieval with conscious sedation for ivf. All the staff could not have been lovelier putting me at ease and the sedation was AWESOME 😄 it’s the thing I’m most looking forward to on our next round of ivf in a couple of months. Pure relaxation and zero anxiety-I wish I could have a weekly dose!

Hope you start feeling better soon, look after yourself straight after your operation and be kind to your body to let it heal.

ronaldweasleyy · 19/01/2022 08:54

@Legoninjago1

Now that sounds exciting!! 😂😂
Surgeons have all been to see me and reassured me so just waiting now!

So glad you’ve got that over with. Rest up now.

FuzzyPuffling · 19/01/2022 15:42

Hurrah OP.

Hope you are feeling sort of relaxed that it's all over. (I'm not sure that "relaxed" is the perfect word, but I hope you know what I mean!)

Here's to a very speedy recovery.
