Lorazepam and alcohol. Any medical folk about?

No lectures please as I’m going through a really tough time in my life. I took 2mg of lorazepam and drank a bottle of wine? I feel fine, a-bit sleepy. Will I be ok? I can’t phone 101 because I will (probably) be wasting their time and preventing them from treating more important folk.

I'm no medical expert, but probably yes you will be fine.

If other humans can take copious amounts of street valium, crack cocaine, heroine plus alcohol on a daily basis and still walk to tell the tale. I'd hazard a guess that one bottle of wine and 2mg you would be fine.

But again I'm no medical expert, I just work in substance misuse.

@TheHairyDinosaur
Thanks. That’s reassuring

That’s unlikely to be relevant to OP as the people you are talking about will have built up tolerance (and their mortality rates are likely high).

Is anyone with you?

TheHairyDinosaur · 18/01/2022 20:46

I forgot to add, do phone NHS direct if you are concerned and take their medical advice however.

Andtheyalllookjustthesame · 18/01/2022 20:47

You will probably be absolutely fine. Plenty of people done the same or worse, me included. I did also get the same anxiety before though and kept myself up drinking coffee and water and slept in the recovery position. But then I'm an anxious type.

Greenbluestar · 18/01/2022 20:48

I have taken lorazepam and alcohol before, but never at the same time. I feel so stupid now.

Probably not your best idea ever. You will
Feel sleepy as you've had alcohol with a sedative. Respiratory depression would be a concern but you haven't taken over the daily max dose so should be ok.

SailingNotSurfing · 18/01/2022 21:21

Go to bed and sleep it off. Lorazepam taken with alcohol can cause blackout amnesia for some, so stay at home where you are safe. Why are you prescribed lorazepam? That's quite a hefty sedative.

Reassuring. Thanks. I’m such a worrier

Yeah, I’ll stay home. No where else to go anyway. The doctor gives them to me to take the edge off. I get 30x 1mg every four weeks but seldom use that much. Some days I don’t even take them but it’s been a hell of a week.

Why did you do it? You say because you are going through a tough time but you don't say whether it was international or accidental. Can you speak to your GP or seek help elsewhere?

Spongeboob · 18/01/2022 21:56

Maybe prop yourself up a bit to sleep as a precaution but you should be okay.

What does propping yourself up do?

International. Not to overdose or kill myself. I just took the lorazepam to take the edge off then I felt like I really needed a drink as my head is a mess then a drink led to another drink. I know. Stupid.

It's in case you are sick.

HangingOver · 18/01/2022 22:10

I lived on red wine and lorazapam for the best part of a year. I ended up in rehab and with enormous gaps in my memory. You'll be fine but don't make a habit of it for god's sake it gets out of hand very fast!!!

Lie on your side in case you are sick, with your head on a pillow. What time did you stop drinking ? And what time did you take the lorazepam it is quite short acting ( an hour or so).

Greenbluestar · 19/01/2022 16:50

I have lived to see another day 😁

Lorazepam is very addictive - are you able/want to reduce?

I have never found it addictive, which is strange as I do have an addictive personality. I can go days without it. It’s the best drug for anxiety without a doubt. 🤷🏼‍♀️
