Can I ask for advice about broken tooth/crown?

I had a dentist appointment back in October as my back molar (already filled) was hurting when I bit on anything hard. The dentist recommended a crown, which was booked to be done in December. The dentist then had to cancel my appointment due to a problem with the lab which would be making the crown. It was then rescheduled for January.

Whilst waiting for the appointment for the crown to be fitted, a piece of the molar which was due to be crowned, broke off. The dentist did a filling in the part of the tooth which had broken off. At the appointment, the dentist said if you change your mind about having a crown, let me know.

Roll forward to a month later, the filling seems perfectly adequate and I am thinking perhaps I don't need a crown? I can chew with no problems and there is no pain or discomfort at all.

I know I should get back in touch with the dentist to discuss it, but just wondered if anyone had any pearls of wisdom or similar experiences? I am due to go for the first appointment to get the crown done next week.

I'd have it. Thing is, if it breaks again you might no longer have option of a crown and will just end up losing it. I lost a molar like that. It just kept breaking and eventually there was more filling than tooth and it had to come out. I wish I'd had it crowned after the second time it broke when there was still enough tooth left to hold a crown.

My 2 crowns are years old, one I had done when I was 16 and is still going strong in my 30s. The other one the dentist said would likely fail as she couldn't get right to the tip of the roots but I've had it quite a few years now and it's fine.

I had this..last year ....I'm 57... my dentist said it could be filled it and its been fine... he said I could have a crown but always the risk of getting bacteria under there then an infection....he did a white filling....its at the back...no one see it...it looks fine....

I cracked a heavily-filled molar at Christmas and a piece of tooth 'dangled'. The dentist removed this bit and put a temp filling while I wait to have whole thing removed next month. Apparently the crack goes below the gum so unable to crown - I'll be left with no chewing teeth on that side and can't face/afford an implant (I'm 70 this year so they've lasted quite well). I'm tempted to stay with the temp filling as I can't see what I've got to lose but, in your situation, I'd have it crowned in case you also end up with a tooth that can't be saved.
