I'm very overweight, very unfit and need to do something about it.

I've got an exercise bike which I use 30 minutes, everyday. I try to keep heart rate is about 120/130.

I've started a low impact body project workout on YouTube. 25 minutes and I'm very out of breath. Heart rate is way up past 150 when I do it.

Which is better for calorie burn? All calculators say the cycling but the workout has me significantly more sweaty.

I'm very confused and don't want to be wasting my time.

Both are good. Why not alternate?

Youaremypenguin · 18/01/2022 04:23

I think this is the plan but I would like to concentrate on calories burnt as that's my aim! I'm very time poor but really need make time for me more often.

I felt great after getting sweaty 😂. But I can't shower twice a day as have very dry skin. As with everything it's about finding out the best balance

It's actually good practice for weight loss not to just do the same thing for every workout.

It's not just about the calories you burn during the workout, it's also about building strength so you burn more calories when you're not doing a workout.

You could do intervals on the bike - hills /sprints.

Have you built in a rest day or two?

Make sure you're building muscle because that will increase your resting calorie burn, as well as you burning calories during the actual work out. Muscle building/strength training is a brilliant tool for weight loss which is often overlooked.

As Palavah have said it is much better to alternate what you're doing instead of sticking to one work out every day. You'll get better results.

Also, the trackers that show you calories burnt from exercise are notoriously inaccurate. Whatever your exercise bike/phone app/smart watch etc says you've burnt from your exercise bike is probably very generous.

I know nothing about the need for rest days 🙈. I was planning on daily but that must be wrong from what you're saying?

I am changing the bike resistance as I go to maintain my heart rate.

You can cycle daily that's fine. But you should also add in weights and resistance workouts maybe 3 days a week?
Remember weight loss is done in the kitchen not the gym. You need to crack the nutrition if you want to lose weight, but the exercise will help.
