Does one size in a clothes store actually vary in size depending on the item of clothing?

Say someone checks their measurements and compares them to a shop’s size guide. Surely the woman won’t need to buy clothes just in that size when shopping there, and that it would depend on the item of clothing?

If she has big hips, for instance, she may wear size 16 skinny jeans because they’re the tightest, but only size 14 or 12 in wide leg trousers because they’re more roomy. This is despite the fact that all size 16 trousers etc should have the same hip measurements.

Same with a busty woman - she’d have to wear bigger sizes for a fitted top than an oversized blouse.

So does that mean then that measurements in a shop aren’t consistent because they’re not really the same depending on the item?

Sizing at H&M appears to be completely random, I find I have to try on at least a few different sizes for any item. There's little point ordering anything online there IMO because it's so unlikely to fit, so you'll have to end up returning it in any case.

Twice I've bought jeans and work trousers in Primark, two pairs of the exact same trousers in the same size. Nope, not remotely the same size.

The shops have all gone to shit.

Yes ordering online is even worse. Could still be wrong even if you already have clothes from that brand and so should know your size

Oh yeah, H&M was a bit of a lucky dip in terms of whether the size would fit. I had three shirts in three colours, exactly the same style. Three different sizes. Mad. And I stopped buying trousers there as they were so inconsistent with the sizing and I couldn't be bothered taking two or more of the same style and same size into the changing room just to see if they fitted or not. Sometimes they did, sometimes they were too big and sometimes too small.

I've also found that if a shop has different ranges, the sizing reflects who the range is for. Eg M&S classic is more generous than the Autograph.

I can't be bothered clothes shopping any more.

Yes it's frustrating having to deal with inconsistencies in just one shop never mind multiple!

All the big names buy from a variety of suppliers who all use their own patterns so a 12 from one will not be the same as a 12 from another factory.

Depends on the fabrics used too.

Yes currently wearing marks T shirts in size 12-18 and all fit the same. It’s most annoying keep sending things back. Some fits chest 34 could mean “as long as you don’t want breath” or “room to swing a cat”

women's clothing is completely mad. A size 12 from one store has no bearing to a size 12 from a different shop, and agree with pp that sometimes the shops themselves don't even match - I've been an XS and an XL in H&M on the same day. I recently ordered 2 dresses from asos, one (admittedly a 'loose fit' style) size 6 was too big, and a size 14 in a different dress was too tight! So I'm between a 4-16 in asos! I've also bought the exact same shorts in different colours that were supposed to be the same size but weren't. And don't get me started on 'average' leg lengths!

Why can't we have like mens sizes with actual, non-refutable measurements!
