Spring is coming

There is a cold, but peaty sort of smell outside, of damp earth and new life. Birds are singing their hearts out. It isn’t pitch black at almost five o clock.

Can anyone else sense winter coming to an end?

I nipped out to the shop at 4.45pm today and really noticed how much lighter the sky was. It made me think what a mild winter we've had and that spring doesn't seem so far away. Then the gritter lorry passed, so I'm not counting my chickens yet.

5:00? Think yourself lucky, up here it was dark before 4pm before Christmas!

I’ve seen my first lambs, snowdrops and even a hint of daffodils so it is moving in the right direction ☀️

I saw some daffodils at the weekend. I had to do a double take.

It's the middle of January so midwinter exactly.

That said this high we have over us is going to last a few more days yet and I am glad as I love the crisp cold sunny days of winter.

I too will be happy to see the daffodils and we often have lambs in the field behind our paddock that I can see from the kitchen.

Bear in mind that the beast from the east that we had just a few short years ago was in March!

I will be glad to see spring though, January always seems to be one fo the longest months.

Today is Old Twelfth Night, when you should go a'wassailing.

So get some cider mulled, and go and pour some libations on your fruit tree roots, to ensure a good harvest.

As well as quaffing cider, do some singing and banging of drums to scare away any lurking evil spirits.
All good family fun on a cold night!
