I know it’s a bit of a scam but was thinking about signing up and being the only ‘customer’ and getting cheaper books for DCs, anyone do this?

Anyone done this? Smile

You'll find the books cheaper on amazon, ebay or in supermarkets. Don't do it!

Shapiro · 17/01/2022 18:08

Try the secondhand book market for good condition inexpensive books.

@Shapiro

Try the secondhand book market for good condition inexpensive books.
Is this online?

By secondhand book market I was referring to secondhand books in general.

There are many retailers such as Abe Books, eBay, world of books etc

Diamondsapphire · 17/01/2022 18:17

Ah - I see. Yes but the cost of postage can be prohibitive and also DC is a toddler so a lot of books are the sort of touch / feel ones which don’t tend to survive toddlerhood very well Grin

Have a look in charity shops? The ones round here vary from 20p to £2 for kids books, so I don't pay more for books unless they're extra special... But definitely take a look, if you're paying pennies for books, you won't mind if they get a bit battered!

MarshmallowFondant · 17/01/2022 18:21

Usborne is a scamtastic pyramid scheme or MLM scheme.

I'm sure there will be a hunbot along shortly to tell you it's not like that at all and how they are living their best life selling their stuff.

Just buy their books from The Works, or Amazon, or second hand from ABE or Oxfam.

fitzbilly · 17/01/2022 18:23

Oh Amazon second hand books usually cost £2.80 in postage, That's hardly prohibitive!

The works is good for toddler books.

sunshineandrain82 · 17/01/2022 18:28

I usually go to the charity shops.
6 books for £1 etc

I find world of book and abe books offer free postage on eBay.. or is that there website. I can't quite remember which way around it is.

SavoyCabbage · 17/01/2022 18:29

Usbourne books cost far more through Usbourne than they do anywhere else.

It's not a good way of getting cheaper books. Charity shops are full of children's books. I used to go to tue library at least once a week.

Hosum · 17/01/2022 18:29

The works currently have 10 for £10!

Hockeyboysmum · 17/01/2022 18:29

Asda etc are cheaper for the 'thats not my...' type books.

Diamondsapphire · 17/01/2022 18:39

But on top of the cost of the book @fitzbilly is does work out costly. So for example That’s Not My Dinosaur is £4 on Amazon at the moment - second hand is £3.87!

I don’t really have time to browse charity shops at the moment - life a bit hectic!

Will try Asda. I haven’t been able to see any suitable books in The Works.

MisgenderedSwan · 17/01/2022 18:46

We get lots of books from eBay - usually free postage. Or keep an eye on local selling sites. The works with 10 for £10 are usually good for books for the younger age. We also join the local library so the children can borrow and return once read - then there's story time and activities too.

Twonkers · 17/01/2022 18:49

Where are you based? We have a ludicrous number of toddler books.

… but charity shops, the Works, ASDA/ Sainsburys/ Tesco these are very good calls (… do give the Works a chance - they have some fantastic titles in the 10 for £10 range).

Can you sign up for Bookstart? And don’t forget the World Book Day vouchers. And the library usually do a free book in the summer. All very good stuff. Not to be sniffed at!

Good luck. You will soon have far more than you need (half a dozen is enough).

Diamondsapphire · 17/01/2022 18:50

Thanks. I’m in the East Midlands Smile

Getting to the library is difficult and alsoDC has a tendency to eat books Grin Will look in supermarkets.

VioletLemon · 17/01/2022 18:52

World of books website is excellent.

MsChatterbox · 17/01/2022 18:53

World of books is great and free postage too!

Twonkers · 17/01/2022 18:53

Supermarkets are most probably the answer. The Works is online.

Diamondsapphire · 17/01/2022 19:08

Thanks for the world of books recommendation - Waterstones is expensive Smile

55mirabeau · 17/01/2022 19:12

A library trip once a month should tide you over, they don’t mind board books getting a bit nibbled either! We have saved a fortune and always have new books in the house, that we don’t have to store long term.

Ragwort · 17/01/2022 19:15

It's a shame you 'don't have time' to browse in charity shops, I manage a charity shop and we get so many good quality children's books donated, many of them Usbourne. But sadly it is so hard to sell them, everyone says they want 'cheap' books ... but don't want to browse in charity shops Confused.

Diamondsapphire · 17/01/2022 19:15

Mmm but in covid times it’s a bit different. Plus then it’s a hassle returning them!
