Colour Matching Paint

Can anyone tell me the best way to get a good colour match for paint?
There's a F&B colour I like, but even in the modern emulsion it's going to be too chalky for my kitchen. I got it colour matched in B&Q today with Valspar and have painted a patch next to the F&B and it looks very different.
The guy scanned the sample on the colour chart - is there a better way of doing it or is this as accurate as it's going to get?

Thanks. It's Purbeck Stone.

It's coming up that there's a Tikkurilla shade that's similar but don't think anywhere nearby is a stockist. Also not sure on that brands finishes etc.

I’ve had many f&b paints mixed up at Brewers, using Johnstone acrylic durable emulsion, always been fine.

Did they match it from the colour chart or some other way?

Dulux trade centres are excellent for colour matching F&B, our whole house is Dulux paint in F&B colours

My decorator gets my F&B colours mixed up by Crown. Can get eggshell paint done in the same colour too.

Can you buy a tester pot of the colour you want and get it matched from that?
I think that might be better than from the colour chart.

I wanted a Wickes paint that was discontinued matched, and as I had a scraping left in an old pot, I painted it on a sheet of white paper and took it to the Dulux mixing shop.
It worked out very expensive at about £55 for 2.5 litres, but it was absolutely perfect and worth every penny!

Yes I think this is what I'm going to do. If it still doesn't come out right then I'll have to just make my peace with fingermarked F&B walls I suppose!

I use dulux trade stores, they have a brand called heritage that has f&b colour matches, or at least it happens so often the staff know f&b colours. Dulux heritage is much nicer to paint with as well as being half the price. I've been very impressed.

We had johnstones colour matched at brewers, the colours the same but it’s not as scrubbable as I’d like.

When I redecorate that area I’m going for mylands as it’s scrubbable.

We had a Valspar paint mixed just st from their colour swatches and it was a horrible pant to use and had to do three coats to get a smooth coverage.

There have been lots of reports online if it giving off a funny smell as well

purpledagger · 18/01/2022 09:35

Are your current walls white? If not, the colour of your current walls may be affecting how your chosen colour looks, even if it's very light.

Dh is a painter. He gets most of his paint mixed via decorator centre online, typically using Johnstone trade.

@goldensilver sorry only just seen your question to me.
I just tell them the f&b colour, they don’t colour match, they
already know the tints needed.
Hope you get the colour you want. My top tip would be to paint the sample on to a large piece of lining paper rather than the wall, and bend it in to a corner so the colour reflects onto each side. Much better way to see the true colour than pairing on a white background.
