If you have a cleaner/you are a cleaner - would this be a job to do?

I’ve had a cleaner a while now and she never ever throws rubbish away/empties bins etc ? I’m not sure if I was wrong to assume this would be something she would do ?

Last week there was a cup upstairs and as usual a few wrappers about that got left. I don’t actually expect her to load dishwasher or wash up but I thought maybe she would have picked up the 2/3 bits of rubbish and put the cup in the kitchen , today a similar thing and never ever has emptied any bits main rubbish or wastepaper or bathroom

I’m not sure if I’m expecting too much? Or are these things that are normally done

I have never had a cleaner who didn’t empty bins and move the odd cup/bit of rubbish. When I was a cleaner myself I also did these things.

FawnFrenchieMum · 17/01/2022 16:05

First, amazing cleaner (gutted to lose them) did all of it, emptied all bins, moved any rubbish and cups laying around.
Second cleaner would empty waste bins around the house and move cups etc but never emptied the kitchen bin. Was one thing that annoyed me and I kept meaning to mention if.

PartyPlan · 17/01/2022 16:06

IME the cleaners are there to clean, not tidy up. It makes their job harder if they have to tidy as they go too. My cleaner would empty the bathroom bins though which was helpful and probably would have put a few wrappers in the bin.

I've been a cleaner, emptied ALL buns and collected any dishes, washed them too in some homes.

DefinitelySureThatImNotsure · 17/01/2022 16:08

I always tidy and make beds before she arrives and I move things onto the beds so she can hoover easily so the house is quite tidy it’s just the odd cup here and there or a few wrappers usually in dc room and just the bin issue

Ours empties the bathroom bin but not the main bin, think we probably told her not to bother with the main though. She'd definitely bin any (obvious) rubbish and always washes up anything that's been left out and puts away any drying we've left on the draining board. I try to make sure everything's been put away before they get here tho!

AwaitingSueGraysInvestigation · 17/01/2022 16:12

Ours don't do bin-emptying, although I think they would if I asked them to.

But to be honest the recycling and waste rules around here are so bitty and random that it's just easier for me to do it anyway.

BobBobbity · 17/01/2022 16:13

Our cleaner emptied waste bins around the house, and would definitely do “light” tidying of the sort you are talking about (eg moving a dirty cup).

Hibye23289 · 17/01/2022 16:23

I empty all bins and would move rubbish and clean cups. I rarely empty the kitchen bin as it is usually half full but if it was full I would empty it,I made one of the beds the other day as it wasnt done. I do what needs to make the house look clean

IglesiasPiggl · 17/01/2022 16:27

My cleaner empties all the bins, but by mutual agreement doesn't throw away anything else even if it looks like rubbish. This is because my DS has lots of "treasures" that look like rubbish to the untrained eye!

MarshaBradyo · 17/01/2022 16:29

All bins emptied and I’m not sure about cups as usually remove any

But probably

Wrappers likely too

AnathemaPulsifer · 17/01/2022 16:32

Mine empties the bins and moves dirty stuff next to the sink.

Wideawakeandconfused · 17/01/2022 16:32

Ours does, and would wash the cup too

ComDummings · 17/01/2022 16:35

I think moving things can probably be a bit of a minefield for cleaners, some people won’t want them to move anything, just clean. Worth speaking to her about it though, I’m sure if you ask her to she will do it.

reluctantbrit · 17/01/2022 16:35

Ours did the general rubbish as she empited the bathroom binbag into it but not recycling or food waste. As she came the day after bin day the bins weren't full anyway.

She would wash up if there would be any dishes on top of the dishwasher when she cleaned the kitchen, we normally ensured there weren't any but sometimes there was the odd cup or bowl from breakfast.

smittenkittennn · 17/01/2022 16:42

Mine empties all bins (compost, bathrooms, kitchen and recycling). She also washes any dishes left and empties the dishwasher though I tend to like to do the handwash dishes myself as I'm particular.

surprised by some of the comments. My cleaner also changes the bedding on both beds, does some ironing and will fold and put away any laundry. All this is in addition to cleaning bathrooms, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, etc. I can see maybe not doing the ironing but aren't the rest of these things quite standard?

seekinglondonlife · 17/01/2022 16:47

Why would a cleaner not do dishes? That is cleaning surely?

Kshhuxnxk · 17/01/2022 17:00

Cleaning and tidying are two different things. What happens when she/he puts the wrappers in the bin and you had something written on it. The bins yes, I would expect them to empty a kitchen bin but not a bathroom bin.

Legodout · 17/01/2022 17:09

I empty all bins before the cleaner arrives and my whole house is tidied (so there wouldn't be any wrappers or dishes) but that's because I want her to spend her time cleaning, which is the job I hate, rather than tidying. However, I think binning wrappers and washing mugs are part of standard cleaning. I'm less sure about actually emptying bins - surely a bathroom/bedroom bin needs sorting through for recycling vs rubbish, and I'm not sure that's something a cleaner would be expected to do.

notangelinajolie · 17/01/2022 17:15

I don't ask my cleaner to tidy. I'm fairly tidy, it's the cleaning I don't like. She just cracks on with the cleaning. She doesn't wash the dishes, most of them go in the dishwasher after tea so there aren't any for her to do. I haven't got bins inside, I just take rubbish straight outside to the big bins as I go along.

Her main job is cleaning the bathroom and making everything shine. In the kitchen, she cleans the oven, hob, sink, taps, worktops etc wipes the cupboard doors and then sweeps and mops the floor. Then she hoovers the whole house and finally gives everywhere a quick dust and polish.
