Opinions on new specs please

Got some new frames last week. The lenses look awful. I appreciate my eyesight has deteriorated and my prescription is complex but the lense in the new frame is so thick it looks ridiculous. I am going to go back to opticians tomorrow but thought I’d get some feedback from you lovely lot before I do. I don’t want to get emotional but I know I might.
Previous frames were Karen Millen, new ones are slightly larger Marc Jacobs. When I collected them I was told the lenses were so thick because the frames were larger. I’m
not sure whether to believe them…. Pics here of old frames then I will post pics of new ones

I'm not an optician, just a long time glasses wearer with a very high prescription (-11.75).

This is true ime. Every time I've chosen new frames I've been warned off the more 'modern' larger frames because it would mean the glass would be thicker.

Take them back if you aren’t happy. Glasses are too bloody expensive to put up with some that you don’t like.

What did you pay for the lenses? Ie. Are they standard?

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 16/01/2022 18:48

What is your prescription?

CrotchetyQuaver · 16/01/2022 18:48

It looks like the new glasses don't have the "high index" lenses in but standard ones.

You should have gone to Asda, they put the thin lenses in and don't charge extra.

It is correct that bigger frames means the lens edges will be thicker, but that looks to be more like standard rather than high index lenses.

Badtasteflump · 16/01/2022 18:50

I would take them back. Imo they should have warned you off larger styles, or suggested you have the lenses thinned (more expensive but enables you to have larger frames).

SiobhanSharpe · 16/01/2022 18:53

Did you have the 'thin and light' lenses? They can make quite a difference, although they are a lot more expensive.
I always buy the thinnest lenses available to avoid looking like my glasses have milk bottle bottoms for lenses.
A pair of glasses usually costs me £500 quid or so, with designer frames like you have OP.
I am extremely short sighted.

Lightupmynorthernsky · 16/01/2022 19:03

Thanks. These are supposed to be thin and light reactive lenses, my prescription is at least -12.75 in this eye, other lense is about a -4, and cost £219. I don’t mind paying more as I rely on them. I’m just really disappointed with these and haven’t worn them outside the house yet as I am so self conscious

What's the prescription in them roughly? I think they've already been thinned. They just look thicker because the frames are wider. I googled the code off the karen millens and the size came up as 51-14. The Marc Jacobs looks like a 53-16 on the side. That's a 4mm difference overall if those are the sizes. Your prescription is very high and that will have a big impact.

Also because the Marc Jacobs are deeper they'll probably have vertical heights in as well and that'll increase the thickness too.

Are they from a specsavers? They offer a no fuss guarantee. If you aren't happy they'll change them. Honestly don't get upset about it. The opticians will put them right/change the frame if you aren't happy.

Lightupmynorthernsky · 16/01/2022 19:09

GreenPumpkins thanks and yes they are from Specsavers. I’ll pop down tomorrow and see what they can do

The price you paid is for the thinnest 1.74 plastic lenses so you can't go thinner in plastic. Glass would be heavy. Take the old ones with you and ask to change to a smaller frame. You're going to be limited on what you can choose (I'm sure you'll have been told that before) but they'll sort it out. It won't be a problem.

SaltedCaramelHC · 16/01/2022 21:20

also if you have astigmatism, then it might be thicker in certain directions that are more/less obvious depending on the frames. Mine is -10.5 in one direction, but somehow the arm of the frames hides the thickest bit, so I don't think it is that obvious. You could try to find a frame where the arm is a bit lower down on the eyepiece, so that it is more likely to hide it a bit. I've also got the highest index I can in plastic.
