Cracked front tooth

wonderwomen79 · 16/01/2022 18:29

When I was a teenager my front tooth cracked on a hard boiled sweet. Since then I've just had it filled and every now and then it cracks and I get it filled at my nhs dentist. Since last having it done it doesn't feel right and I don't like how it looks. Whenever I've asked at my nhs dentist he brushes me off, like he is in a rush and doesn't want to do anything to it. Now I'm prepared to pay and go private but what is it id need, would it be a crown, a cap? Any idea of prices? I'm going to call a few places tomorrow just just after any ideas

I have no idea about front teeth but a part of my molar broke off and I had a crown fitted.

Might be veneers for front teeth?

My DH had similar issues with one of his front teeth, eventually it sheared off during lockdown.

Our NHS dentist wouldn’t even see him as he was in no pain.

We went private and he had a dental implant rather than a denture put in. The implant cost £3k, he had a crown on his other front tooth so they would match and that was an additional £500. He had a lovely smile now and wishes he had it done ages ago

Probably a crown? I can't believe the dentist has just left you walking around with a cracked tooth for years! Surely it could break at any time?

Composite bonding is cheaper than veneers and looks the same. It also doesn't damage the tooth below

Oinkypig · 16/01/2022 19:07

Without seeing the tooth it’s hard to say but it sounds like there is enough tooth to hold a composite (white filling) so there might not be the need to have a crown (crowns and caps are the same thing). Once you start down the line of crowns and veneers you have to remove more tooth and they will all need replaced eventually and more tooth will be removed.

I would research and consider a replacement white filling. Without going into the details there are all sorts of systems with dentins layers and translucency options that just aren’t available on the NHS.

My front two top teeth were terrible, chipped along the bottom and also down the surface of them too. Looked so bad i would never open mouth smile in photos.
I saw the private cosmetic dentist at my nhs dentist practice and it only cost 100 per tooth to have them filled in/reshaped with a type of tooth coloured resin. Cheaper than veneers. Has been 2 years now and so far so good, i regret not doing it sooner!

Following with interest as I want to have my chipped front tooth repaired. It looks horrible. I've already got a crown on my other front tooth due to a swing related incident as a child. I'm hoping that I can have composite bonding on it as it's quite a small chip.

I chipped my tooth in primary school.

The dentist tried to fill it in so it was invisible but it came out while I was eating a potato waffle Grin I then had a cap fitted when I was about eleven and it's stayed put ever since - 20+ years now.

You can't see it unless you look right at it, but I got it done on the NHS as a kid so I couldn't tell you about prices.

I'm following too. As I also have a chipped front tooth. Bonded composite sounds like something I'd need.

wonderwomen79 · 16/01/2022 21:17

Thanks for the replies, I've had a look at some ideas of what was suggested and the bonding sounds good, I'm going to ring a few places now I have an idea what to ask for

I broke my front tooth years ago whilst playing net ball at school. I lost the bottom half of my front tooth, The dentist managed to save the top bit and the nerve was ok. The dentist built the remaining tooth back up using a composite white filling. I broke my tooth when I was 12 years old, I'm now late thirties, and I've had it rebuilt twice over the years. An excitable puppy recently hit me in the face which cracked it off so I've just had it re done. I think it's great. I would avoid going down the veneer route at all costs, I've never had one but they appear to cost £££££. I have an NHS dentist and my new composite filling was re done last week and it was an NHS Band 2 job, about £65 ( I think).
