WWYD? 'Dog fight'?

Sideswiped · 16/01/2022 17:24

I don't want to be 'that' neighbour...
A few months back, I was having a late night smoke and heard a door open, then a dog yelping. Didn't hear a voice which I thought was weird as if I'd accidentally hurt a dog I'd soothe it. Thought it was just one of those things.
Less than ten minutes ago, I heard (from the same house) a dog yelping and snarling. At first I thought it was a dog fight but then realised that I didn't hear any barking and it only seemed to be one dog that was making the noise. I did hear a voice but not what was said, but whatever it was was said in a flat tone.
WWYD?
(So as not to drip feed, they wouldn't know it was me if I did decide to report - several houses nearby.)

Why are you still thinking about a (probable) non event from 'a few months back'??

Astella22 · 16/01/2022 17:27

Please report this suspected abuse. Poor wee doggie.

@Sarahlou63, Err, because as I mentioned it was the same house?
Surely you can tell from my post that I'm concerned?

SeedsForDeeds · 16/01/2022 17:29

Yes I'd report it. Poor dog.

Shapiro · 16/01/2022 17:31

Some dogs when let out into the garden of an evening may yip or growl if there’s a perceived cat in the bushes.

One of mine went vessel one evening and he sounded like a banshee and I couldn’t see anything which had set him off until he ran at it but not close enough to touch it and then leapt back and I saw it was a ginormous hedgehog!

You need to see what has happened, not just reply on what you heard.

Sarahlou63 · 16/01/2022 17:32

Ah, sorry - my bad.

Sideswiped · 16/01/2022 17:32

@Shapiro, the dog sounded scared.

No she doesn't. You should always report suspected abuse. Not wait until you've seen it for yourself.

Shapiro · 16/01/2022 17:33
@Shapiro, the dog sounded scared.
One of my dogs, the biggest has a pathetic yelping noise instead of a bark and will make a small yipping noise when there is a knock at the door. He’s not scared but it sounds like he is.

PigeonLittle · 16/01/2022 17:36

My little doggy started yelping last year - arthritis Sad especially after laying quiet for a bit and then getting up out for a wee.

Soulstirring · 16/01/2022 17:40

My neighbours dog has epilepsy and does this when fitting. Yelping, snarling etc it’s horrendous but it’s well loved and on medication. I appreciate why you’re concerned, I absolutely would be. Are you generally cautious if said neighbour? You need to find out more before reporting etc.

Sideswiped · 16/01/2022 17:50

I understand what people are saying, but the possibility of being scared or fitting would make an owner want to say something to the dog wouldn't it?
I can't imagine there are any owners on here who don't talk to their pets.
I know I did when I had them and possibly sounded a bit deranged at times.

My dog does a yelping sound when I'm emptying the rubbish. She really sounds like she is crying, and I worry that the neighbours think she is injured somehow, but in reality she is stupidly over excited about the bin being emptied. God only knows why!
My response is usually "for God sake man will you shut up"

Sideswiped · 16/01/2022 17:51

@TheChip, that's the point I just made.
It shook me up to be honest.

But then I imagine if someone was beating their dog they'd likely shout or swear at them before or after hitting?

Kinko · 16/01/2022 17:53

Reasons my dog has yelped like a lunatic:

 1. she laid herself in an uncomfortable position
 2. she stepped on a phone charging cable (it wasn't plugged in) but ouch her paw
 3. she ran into a bush
 4. we moved a pillow
 5. the hoover fell over
 6. the door wasn't open
 7. she can't run on wooden floors
 8. she didn't want to get out of the car
 9. she didn't want to climb the stairs
 10. she was having her nails clipped

Honestly, this dog could have just been having their nails clipped often met with yelps and maybe snarls too. That would account for the flat tone voice too because you have to stay calm no matter how much they fuss.

Not saying don't report - just there could be a very innocent explanation.

At the same time though, if someone called the RSPCA or similar on me - we'd have nothing to hide, so no big deal.

WonderfulYou · 16/01/2022 17:56

If someone was being abusive you would hear them shouting or saying something.

If it was another dog attacking it then I’d have thought you’d hear it.

I wonder if it’s a cat going for it.

HippyMoon · 16/01/2022 17:59

My dog sometimes yelps and snarls if we stop cuddling her. Having said that I'd probably report it as if they have nothing to hide there won't be an issue. They'll know from the dog's body language (which it doesn't sound like you saw?) if there's an issue, quite likely.

Sideswiped · 16/01/2022 18:03

I didn't (couldn't due to fences) see the dog. I've just called the RSPCA and as it's the first incident and nothing really that concrete to go on, they've logged it.
If anyone called in the future, the second report would trigger a visit.
It may be something or nothing, but at least my conscience is clear as I've tried to help.
As PP have said, if they have nothing to hide, it will be fine, and I'm sure the RSPCA would then be able to reassure any subsequent callers.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 16/01/2022 18:05

My dog does this if I try and groom her. Or actually picking up the brush. Or if the cat bullies her.

Wolfiefan · 16/01/2022 18:10

If I heard a noise like that from next door then I would call out and ask if everything was ok. I know my neighbours though. I wouldn’t call the RSPCA.

bollocksthemess · 16/01/2022 18:27

When we house sit for my sister and her cats, my 20kg dog makes a noise like she’s being murdered if the big cat hisses and swipes at her when she walks past.
Full on screaming and yelping and crying, like someone is kicking seven bells out of her.
I don’t tend to say anything to her, it would just make her think there was something to worry about to be honest.

WonderfulYou · 16/01/2022 18:31

I think you’ve done the right thing even though there’s probably nothing to worry about.
It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
