Im going to a gig at the Electric Ballroom in Camden with DD. Could anyone recommend where the safest/ best place to book a hotel would be for after the gig? There's a hotel just up the road, but it is quite expensive and I'm wondering if it would be as safe/ easy to go on the tube and get a hotel near one of the Northern Line stops? DH and young DS will be staying in the hotel too. I'm usually with DH and don't put much thought into being out late, but with just DD and me, I don't want to take any risks!

What do you recommend?
Thanks 😊

I live at the other end of the northern line but often take it home after going out and walk back home on my own, it’s absolutely fine. As for your hotel plan, it’s a bit hard to say without knowing where you’re on about though- there are 2 branches and umpteen stops on the northern line so it’s a huge variety of areas!

NeverSurrender · 16/01/2022 09:25

Thanks @LakeShoreD ! I'm open to any suggestions of places to stay that are easy to get too and relatively safe. Where would you book a hotel for after a night in Camden if you didn't live in London?

The northern line bank branch is closed between Moorgate and Kennington for the next 5 months so I’d avoid that way.

There’s a Travelodge at Euston station which would be quite convenient. You can go anywhere, including Camden, quickly and simply. It’s not the most glamorous location but at least you know what you’re getting.

PP’s suggestion of Euston is pretty decent - really good transport links there and it’s busy at all hours so very safe. Also the area Kings Cross is really nice now and that’s also well served for transport. There’s a premier inn if you want good value. I’d definitely head further in towards central London rather than further out, not so much because of safety but just because it’ll be easier as presuming you’re doing more than just the gig during you’re stay.

MarineBlue33 · 16/01/2022 09:39

Depends on whether you want to hang around in that particular part of London the near day- go for a walk/ lunch. Or are you just using the hotel as a pit stop and going back home the next morning.
There is a Premier Inn in Belsize Park , just up the road. Lovely area.

MarineBlue33 · 16/01/2022 09:40

Next day I mean

NeverSurrender · 16/01/2022 09:42

Thank you for all your suggestions, Im just looking at Euston Premier Inn and that looks a good choice- DS loves a premier inn 🤣. We have the day in London and the day after so would also be nice to be central. The gig has been rescheduled twice since early 2020, She's so excited!

There’s also a premier inn in Belsize Park (they call it Hampstead) you can either jump on the tube from Camden or on the 24 bus that goes straight up the hill which to Belsize Park. It’s a really lovely area and close go to the tube station.

Roominmyhouse · 16/01/2022 09:47

We stayed at the premier inn in Brixton after a gig at that venue. It was absolutely fine and is literally over the road from the venue.

strawberry12345 · 16/01/2022 09:48

Travelodge euston is a good idea but also there is a Holiday Inn in Camden a few mins’ walk from the Electric Ballroom which would be the most convenient option

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 16/01/2022 09:50

If you’re planning to do other London stuff too and make a weekend of it then I’d look at hotels around Kings Cross … the area has improved a lot since its old school iffy reputation, it’s well connected for public transport so you can get to the West End etc easily. And good choice of hotels around the station.

Cottagepieandpeas · 16/01/2022 09:50

I’d go for Euston (not Brixton though, that’s miles away and on a different line).

I'm looking at all your suggestions! I think Euston is coming out number one, it'll be a good base for the rest of the trip too. I took DS for a trip to London when he was 6 and stayed near Kings Cross and we were back at the latest by about 8 but it felt a lot safer than it used to when I was younger.

I'd actually booked the Holiday Inn in Camden when the gig was rescheduled, but they can only offer 2x double beds and DD has autism and likes her own space, especially after a busy gig, so sharing a bed with me wouldn't be ideal! There's nothing else affordable in Camden so I think Euston is going to work.
Thanks a lot for all your suggestions, I was moving into overthinking territory- now we're sorted 😊

You can get a bus if it's easier after the gig as well. I often use the bus instead of the tube.

Roominmyhouse · 16/01/2022 10:08

@elelel it’s not!

I'm not sure what that map is but it's not Camden Confused

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/01/2022 10:13

Camden and Brixton are at opposite ends of London.

Roominmyhouse · 16/01/2022 10:13

Ha ha my bad I read it as electric Brixton not electric ballroom Grin

Bortles · 16/01/2022 10:16

Oh the nostalgia! I used to go there all the time in the 90s and walk home to Baker Street at 4am! Definitely don't recommend doing that however!

playmelikeasymphony · 16/01/2022 10:16

If you’re looking at the Euston Premier Inn, it’s worth noting that if you stand outside the bar entrance of it you can see the sign for the St Pancras Premier Inn and walk to it in about 4 mins (on the same road, just straight down). So def worth checking which is cheaper.

BocolateChiscuits · 16/01/2022 10:25

I live in London. I can honestly say I can't think of an area I would avoid at night on my own or with kids.

There used to be - I hated going underground the roundabout at Elephant and Castle. But that bit has gone now.

I hope that puts your mind at rest a bit. Enjoy your trip.

Also, if you get stuck and need help (e.g. struggling to get a bag up some stairs, need a priority seat on the tube), don't be afraid to ask - you'll nearly always get polite and helpful responses with people falling over themselves to help. But if you don't ask you'll often be unnoticed because people are too busy on their phones or in their thoughts. I think it's because London is so full of people, living there you have to habitually shut down the outside world a bit to stop yourself getting overwhelmed.

beguilingeyes · 16/01/2022 10:32

Camden is always busy and very safe. Lots of food options too and the market is nearby.
Ubers are very cheap in London so you could always use one of those to get back to your hotel.

TheOccupier · 16/01/2022 10:45

How are you getting in and out of London, OP?

NeverSurrender · 16/01/2022 12:18

Thank you everyone! Booked for Euston now, so can relax! Before we've come on the train into Kings Cross, but DH is on about driving up and parking outside of London and getting the underground in. Undecided on that one as yet!
