Croatia for a special holiday?

TR888 · 15/01/2022 20:00

I'm considering Croatia for a holiday with my family to celebrate a milestone birthday. It'll be for two adults and 3 kids aged 9 to 14. Our budget for flights and accommodation is £2,500 tops. We're going for a week in august so that money won't necessarily go a very long way.

Any recommendations? I've heard Pula, on the northern coast, is nice and not too expensive. Has anyone been?

We had a brilliant holiday in Cavtat.

Lovely coastal town, great food and the sea was divine.

My DC were a bit older when we went but all loved it-

did a boat trip to Dubrovnik which was also fab

Can also recommend Cavtat, best holiday we have ever had. We actually stayed at the Sheraton Dubrovnik Riviera in Srebreno, but ate in Cavtat and Mlini. It's a beautiful area, provably even more so now as Sheraton just opened when we went. Easy boat to Dubrovnik although in August it will be so hot, it's hard to actually enjoy the city. We went in July and made the most of it but it was hard work, around 35' every day. Cooler in Srebreno etc as was more open to the sea breeze. Croatia is wonderful though.

I had a lovely holiday in Pula, we stayed with Canvas in a mobile home (not for everyone) but the site also had some other accommodation.

Third recommendation for Cavtat! Beautiful place and so close to the airport! Lovely walk around the promenade and plenty of water sports, shops and restaurants. Dubrovnik 30 mins or so by boat.

I travelled to several of the islands and had an amazing time. in fact its the only place I'd like to go back to and I've travelled fairly extensively. I loved Hvar and hired a mini self drive boat one day just me and my husband - probably need 2 boats for a family like yours. it was amazing being out on the sea driving the boat and parking up round the coastline at the different bars/restaurants with amazing clear green water and sunsets.
Also went to Brac (least interesting), Split and Komiza in Vis where I found out they filmed mama mia 2. Komiza was a gorgeous small town and stayed in a lovely Airbnb right on the sea with its own bit of private beach. If I remember we probably paid about £100 per night in 2019 for accommodation but that would only have been 1 bed.

Thanks for the recommendations! Both Cavtst and Hvar sound fantastic!

What's Pula like, Cormoran?

Our camp site was in the beach, walking distance to the beach and a village with bars and restaurants, and with lots of water sports.

And in the town itself there’s a colosseum with gladiatorial re enactments.

It’s close to the airport, and you can get a day ferry to Venice.

I really liked it.

Thanks! That gives us a few ideas to play with x

We stayed in Sobra on Mljet - it was sleepy, beautiful and perfect. There’s a national park on the island and lots of properties where you can just slip into the water from your private beach. We loved it.

Mumdiva99 · 16/01/2022 09:22

We stayed right up in Umag. It was too sleepy for us. We didn't have a car and with hindsight should have hired one and gone exploring. We also should have booked the day trip to Venice. However on the plus side I thought the hotel was good value, clean, tidy and well maintained. Local restaurants were OK- obviously some nicer than others. Local supermarkets sold drinks at around £1 a 500ml bottlenose coke. So not massively cheap but not too bad. (Big bottles of water were cheap. We also got a few snacks - crisps, nuts etc for during the day.).

We stayed in an Airbnb between Dubrovnik and Cavtat.

It was significantly cheaper than any of the hotels and had it’s own pool.

It was about 10 minutes in an Uber to either of the towns, or there was a public bus we never got.

Best holiday we’ve ever done!

We went to dubrovnik and it was amazing! It is expensive. We paid £2k just for two rooms in a hotel just outside the city.

But there is so much to see and do!

TR888 · 16/01/2022 23:45

Thank you for your great suggestions. I've booked a lovely old house in a small town called Zaton which is 15 mins northwest ofDubrovnik. It looks lovely! Any recommendations for places to visit?
