Living near a football stadium?

Does anyone live near a football stadium and could offer their views on what it's like, particularly if you're not a football fan? We have a choice of two houses and I like one better and the local school seems better too, but it's fairly near a football stadium (not a massive capacity, I think - about 24000). It's about a third of a mile, I'd say.

Can I ask for your experiences of living near one, please? TIA.

We have up on a house close to Twickenham stadium.

There was controlled parking on the streets nearby but so much so that even residents couldn't drive/take their car out on match days. If you needed the car you had to park outside the CPZ the night before.

Also traffic in the area was mental on March days so any personal travel would be massively impacted.

The house we saw was also a dead end.

In the end it seemed like too much to think about and plan on a regular basis. If we weren't locked in on CPZ days it would've probably been ok. I liked the idea of the people enthusiasm on match/concert days.

*Gave up

I’ve lived one street away from a league 2 ground and about .5 of a mile away from Old Trafford.
OT was horrendous, pissing men in the front garden, road closures and when the football season is over… you have cricket/gigs.

BelleEnderman · 15/01/2022 17:29

I think it depends on the club and where the house is in relation to the stadium.

I used to live near QPR's stadium.

It did get v v busy with people and traffic on match days. Our flat was on the route from the tube station to the stadium so it was horrible being out and about on match afternoons. Often couldn't get on a tube either due overcrowding - pain if it was an evening match and I was trying to get home from work!

Sadly there was sometimes police, trouble, asbo behaviour and fighting if it was a match with one of their London rivals too.

lastqueenofscotland · 15/01/2022 17:30

The league two ground was no bother I should add. The busses would be busy on alternate Saturdays and the rough pub I didn’t dare step foot in was full. That was it!

2ducksandI · 15/01/2022 17:30

TBH I absolutely hate race days. Its noisy, the roads are shut, people are totally wankered at 4pm. I imagine it would be similar.

I have lived near a racecourse and now live near a football stadium. Race goers are worse than football fans regards noise and being pissed in my experience.

gogohm · 15/01/2022 17:30

There's around 25 matches a year. You also need to consider other events eg concerts. Wouldn't bother me particularly

elbea · 15/01/2022 17:31

We live two streets away from a 5,000 seater non league team. It’s the loud speakers that are annoying, especially the mid week evening games. Especially trying to get a toddler to sleep and they’re telling people the food huts closing or whatever.

Our house is army married quarters so we didn’t have a choice but I wouldn’t pick to live here if we had the cjoice

gogohm · 15/01/2022 17:31

But I did used to keep up to date with match times because at the end it snarled up the traffic for about 15 mins, I just avoided going out then

@KatherineofGaunt

Thanks for replies. Yes - will have to go round on a match day! Off-street parking so hopefully that won't be a problem. Is it one home match every week? Do you think evening noise will be a problem if the match starts at half 7/8pm? Perhaps I'm overthinking, but I'm really not a fan!
There are usually 25-30 matches per year, none usually in June and July.

Whether parking is a problem depends on the stadium size and area, public transport options etc.

Noise is usually just half hour before and half hour after the game and is usually chanting etc as fans go to and from the stadium.

GoodnightGrandma · 15/01/2022 17:33

You can rent your drive out on match day if you’re not using it.

BlackberrySky · 15/01/2022 17:33

Lower divisions are fine, Premier League not so much. When I was in my twenties, I lived near Stamford Bridge, between the tube and the stadium. I found the hoardes of loud young men parading past my front window quite threatening. I now live near a much more lowly club and hardly notice.

SaturdayKitchenDisco · 15/01/2022 17:37

I live about 1/2 a mile from a premier league stadium in south London. Parking can be a problem on match days but we organise our day so we're either at home or out until about an hour after game has finished. There is increased traffic - but we've only got stuck in it once in 6 years so it's not too bad. We don't get any noticeable anti social behaviour.

Honestly I was worried before we lived here but it's been great. My kids are huge fans of the club and love being so close. Everyone locally supports the club and it feels great to be part of the community. The club often does stuff with our primary school. We do hear the crowd from our garden - my kids love hearing the score a few seconds before it's on the telly /radio!

I'd say go for it!

DaisyDozyDee · 15/01/2022 17:44

It’s worth checking whether any of the transport links or shops change for match days. Our local Tesco used to close for big matches, because it had been built on the stadium car park and it was a condition of planning that the shop car park could be used for events. We also had keep an eye on the match dates because the buses and trains would be diverted.

gorseinonn22 · 15/01/2022 17:44

Used to live about a mile from one, caused no real issues other than traffic for about half an hour after matches ended.

As others have said, can depend on who the club is.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 15/01/2022 17:53

I live less than half a mile from White Hart Lane, more or less on the main route from a couple of obvious stations to get there. Obviously they were here long before me, but their presence still often annoys me (and the year they were away having their new stadium built was bliss). I don't drive, but it snarls up public transport (no buses immediately before/after, unbearably busy tube/train, very unpleasant walking against the crowds on the main road). Lots of grown men pissing everywhere.

The actual noise of the fans in the stadium only registers very occasionally though, and my smallish kids find the match day atmosphere quite exciting. Cleanup afterwards is always impressively quick.

It probably wouldn't be a complete dealbreaker for me... but do check what it's like on match days!

Umbella · 15/01/2022 17:58

I'm quite excited to go and look on a match day now - if it doesn't seem too bad I think we'll go for it!

I think seeing in person is really key. Depending on exactly how things are arranged it could have almost no effect (likely if it’s a dead end) or a huge effect. I really liked living near the Emirates but if we’d been two streets over it would have been awful, simply because of the fan routes.

rifling · 15/01/2022 17:58

I don't live in the UK but I do live near a stadium and don't find it to be a problem. Parking is a bit of a problem but we just make sure we plan on not moving the car. We can hear the goals and there is about 30 seconds lag with the tv broadcast so I can tell ds that his team has scored before he knows if he's watching it on tv. Grin

rifling · 15/01/2022 18:00

Also we have a local by-law that no alcohol can be sold just before a match- have been caught out by that a few times!

FionnulaTheCooler · 15/01/2022 18:10

I used to live within walking distance of Tynecastle and it was a pain, you couldn't go out in the car on a match day as there was no chance of getting parked when you came back. Also had some low level vandalism, car wing mirrors kicked off etc, after matches. Luckily we were renting and could move, I wouldn't buy near a stadium.

WhoaretheMorgans · 15/01/2022 18:11

We share a boundary fence with a league one football ground. Our garden wall is up against their small car park.
They put out cones on match days and we have a driveway so although busy, parking has never been a problem.

It's absolutely fine, we don't mind the cheering on match days and it's very quiet all other days. No anti social behaviour, but we live on a side street, not the main walk to the pubs.

Porridgeislife · 15/01/2022 18:14

As others have said, can depend on who the club is.

That’s very true. Arsenal fans were, on the whole, pretty decent. I actually lived quite close to QPR for a few years too and never had an issue.

However, not sure I’d like to live near Millwall or West Ham’s stadiums.

jerometheturnipking · 15/01/2022 18:24

Depends entirely on who the club is. I used to live half a mile from the Dens Park/Tannadice and it was never an issue. You'd hear a bit of noise on match day but I quite liked that. My friends lived literally across the road from Easter Road and they had more bother - they weren't allowed to park on the road on match day, and had no off street parking, so they had to move their cars by a certain time or get clamped/towed.

dubyalass · 15/01/2022 18:25

I lived just the other side of the ring road from Oxford United, far enough for parking to not be a problem, but near enough to hear the crowd roar for a goal/miss. I actually loved hearing them and quite miss it!

RamblinBoy · 15/01/2022 18:31

I live near one, quite a small one about 12,000. We occasionally have people park in our street and it's busy at the beginning and end of matches.

Funny people have mentioned Ibrox, I once made the mistake of driving through the area on a match day and it was horrendous. Absolutely awful. Gridlocked for hours and very unfriendly looking crowds in every direction (can't remember who was playing). Never again!
