No I don't believe so, sorry.

juggler82 · 15/01/2022 16:48

If he requires extra care compared to a child of similar age without ADHD you could potentially get DLA. It's not that easy to get though. If you're awarded DLA there's a possibility of the carer's element of UC but there's lots of ifs buts and maybes in there.

What support does he need?

He has been offered medication for daytime so he can manage to get through a school day without having a meltdown he has to have 1 -1 supervision at all times as he is a danger to himself and others he also doesn't sleep until 2 - 3 am . He also has been offered night meds xx

You can apply for dla for him. Not sure about universal credit but you may be able to also apply for carers allowance if you earn less than £127 per week

fabulouslyglamorousferret · 15/01/2022 19:15

Hi, how old is he? What needs does he have (due to his ADHD) that another child of his age doesn't have?

If he's 13 and you can't leave him alone whilst you go to the shop (eg) then you may be able to get extra financial support ... if he's 6 and you can't leave him to go to the shop (eg) then you wouldn't qualify, as no 6 year old should be left alone.

Very simplified, but you get my gist!!

Conspiracyornotr · 15/01/2022 19:27

He needs are very much more than a child of his age he can't be left alone at school or at home he is hyper 24.7 he has been excluded 3 times and is on the verge of exclusion he can't cope mentally and emotionally he is all over the place when we go to the shop or even a walk he has no sense of danger I had to give up my night time Job to.support him more and just work during the day and that is being a struggle as I get a call to pick him up every other day so have to leave work. He is very aggressive and doesn't listen.

That sounds really tough. The school exclusions which is leaving you unable to work should entitle you to some financial support.

Does he have an EHCP? If he's being v repeatedly excluded I would be asking b for a review and an alternative school provision. If his needs can be managed better, he should be able to stay in school leaving you able to work.

My son has ADHD and needs 1:1 supervision, lots of sleeping problems etc, he gets lower rate care DLA and I reported that to UC and they give you a big extra in your UC.

Conspiracyornotr · 15/01/2022 20:42

Have son does have a ehcp in place at school. @MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry thank you I have applied for dla am waiting to hear from them. Do I just report in my journal thank you x

OP posts:
Intothelight123 · 15/01/2022 20:47

No but once you get DLA if you report it to UC you'll get added money (or extra tax credits if you're on the old version) and can apply for carers allowance

danni0509 · 15/01/2022 20:49

@Conspiracyornotr Wait until you hear back from DLA . See if he gets awarded and if so, at what rate. Then update UC.

Depending on what rate he gets you will receive the disabled child higher or lower element and carers element on top.

danni0509 · 15/01/2022 20:53

@Conspiracyornotr do trial the medication too Thanks

danni0509 · 15/01/2022 20:55

Sorry for third post, you say he doesn't sleep until 2/3am. What about sleep medication? Who do you see for your sons appointments, have you asked or been offered any sleep medication?

I think I reported it as a change of circumstances. I remember having to select different options but you can always report in your journal and ask if there is anything else you need to do.

My DS is on equasym XL and it has made a huge difference to him. There’s an adjustment period but stick with it, don’t forget to contact the paediatrician with any issues youre having with it and see if they can advise any adjustments. It can take some tweaking until you settle on the right dosage. It’s been the best thing for my son. He’s actually getting an education now and loves school. Before he was on the verge of permanent exclusion and looking at behavioural schools.

danni0509 · 15/01/2022 21:05

My ds takes methylphenidate 3 x a day. It's not really changed him that much but he's got severe adhd so 5mg 3 x a day just isn't a strong enough dose , he's been taking it 5 months, CAMHS won't increase it anymore until he's doing a full day in school, which his school are arseholes and do anything to not have him full time so until he's full time he's staying at this dose. He does have better periods at school tho opposed to pre medication.

Adhd meds can affect sleep further so deffo combine with sleep meds. (Ds has to have 2 sleep meds, some nights they don't work at all - depending what mood he's in)

Yes you should be entitled to dla and caters allowance x
Intothelight123 · 15/01/2022 21:16

My DD takes melatonin, it helps so much. She used to take 3-4 hours to get to sleep, now she asleep between 15-30mins
