What word should be used more often?

Inspired by a poster's use of the word "parsimonious" on a different thread, I was wondering if there are any words you love and wish were used more often?

Someone on the matrix thread pointed out the term "High jinks and jiggery pokery" sounded great and they were going to try to use it more.

I realised that although I think I have quite a good vocabulary, I tend not to use more unusual words, usually picked up from Gyles and Susie on their podcast, and I think it's a shame. English is such a rich language, I am going to try to make an effort to use more colourful and interesting words. Please give me your suggestions 🙂

I came on here to say wazzock. It is nice to see other people agree.

TheLeadbetterLife · 15/01/2022 13:42

Insults like wazzock, pillock, pratt are due a revival and I’ve started using them a lot. I think language at the moment is full of hyperbole, so apparently milder terms feel like they have more impact.

This also goes for other, non-insult based situations. I think saying, “I’m rather worried about this problem” has more punch now that everyone is saying “my anxiety is through the roof” about absolutely everything.

TheLeadbetterLife · 15/01/2022 13:44

Also, those lovely hard consonants on wazzock, pratt etc are so much more fun to say than the ubiquitous asshole, douchebag etc.

IsolaPribby · 15/01/2022 13:45

I love capacious.

IglesiasPiggl · 15/01/2022 13:46

@IsolaPribby

I love capacious.
Oh yes, and voluminous.
DramaAlpaca · 15/01/2022 13:47

I was going to say discombobulated but I see a few posters got there first. I love it.

I saw it used on a thread recently and told the OP how delighted I was to see such a magnificent word used Grin

midsomermurderess · 15/01/2022 13:48

Another vote for 'discombobulate'. If nothing else, it's fun to say.

DP and I try to wrangle “cromulent” into as many sentences as possible. Think we originally started after the Simpsons episode.

Befuddled Sumptuous Vexacious
I don’t wish to be vexatious, but I think you’ve misspelled it!

Agree with sumptuous.

Preposterous
Loquacious
Tumultuous
Mellifluous (so onomatopoeic)

whywouldntyou · 15/01/2022 14:41

I do use some oc these words and people at work look at me like Confused and think I'm being 'posh'. Hmm

butterflyfox · 15/01/2022 14:42

Nibling. Collective term for nephews and nieces. As In “The Niblings are coming for Christmas” Since I learned it I simply can’t understand how I managed before. it’s so useful.

ClariceQuiff · 15/01/2022 14:44

Feign

So much more elegant to feign illness than to fake illness Smile

WorraLiberty · 15/01/2022 14:47

Rapscallion.

I've always used it to describe my DC.

It's even better if you roll the 'R' and put on a very posh accent.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 15/01/2022 14:50

floccinaucinihilipilification

I just love the way it sounds. The sort of word you want to say over and over again.

OldTinHat · 15/01/2022 14:50

No.

(I must learn how to say and use that word more frequently!)

Ticketyboo [love this, often use it !]

Greenandcabbagelooking · 15/01/2022 14:56

Tomfoolery.

I was it at work (teacher), my class have taken to repeating it.

DPotter · 15/01/2022 14:57

Love the suggestions - may have to make a list and have 'Word of the Day' !

I know it's 2 words, however I'm going to suggest in certain city of Westminster postcodes the words 'I resign' should be in more common usage

DramaAlpaca · 15/01/2022 14:58

Yes, I call my DC rapscallions too! Great word.
