Tonsillitis/quinsy

Can someone reassure me that my tonsillitis isn’t developing into quinsy.

I’ve had fevers since Tuesday, started antibiotics Thursday so 2 full days of a 5 day course.
I just seen to be getting worse not better.
My temps are higher and more frequent, the pain is much worse on one side, my jaw is really painful to open and I have ear ache on that side too.

Can’t sleep due to the pain and the cold shivers.

However I haven’t been as unwell as others I’ve read about, I can swallow water, tablets and food (with pain and effort) I’ve been sat downstairs with my family all evening - it was my husbands birthday.

If it was as dire as I’m worrying about I would be bed bound wouldn’t I?

No, I was wandering around with a toddler when I had near quinsy. Didn't have much of a temp.

I went to the Gp in time to catch it though at that point I couldn't swallow (I had to put a cup on the buggy for my spit!) I also had the "hot potato" voice.

He drew a picture of a tonsil crossing an imaginary mid line; if over its off to hospital. He gave me antibiotics (liquid, (I honestly can't remember how i got it down) and it started working in 24 hours.

Either way you could have an infection that needs anti biotics. I will say that I've had appalling viral throat things before though they tend to be both sides.

WarriorN · 15/01/2022 03:36

Sorry missed that you're on anti biotics - it could be a bad local infection? With swelling hence the pain. I remember one that made my jaw lock painfully.,

If no better tomorrow I'd call 111 for advise.

I have a toddler and a preschooler and I wonder if you just can’t be that I’ll when they are around so I am kidding myself that I’m not too bad.

I probably will ring out of hours in the morning.

Quite possibly.

Isn't it usually 7 days for a course? 5 days seems short.

If no better today I'd ring 111 to check

Nobody’s going to reassure you that everything is ok based on that description OP. What did the dr say to do if the antibiotics didn’t lead to improvement within 24-48 hours? Probably go back to drs/call 111/ go to out of hoursservice/A&E right? You’re definitely not wasting anyone’s time getting this looked at again.

What abx are you on? I had this with DS once before his tonsils were out, was already on amox but it wasn’t doing the job, hovered around not really getting better for a couple of days then started to get worse. I took him to a&e at 5am, ended up with steroids and a change in antibiotics and all was good.

My dd had really bad tonsilitis just before Christmas, she was on the verge of being sent to hospital. Her throat was nearly closed up. . It took 4 days for the antibiotics to start working for her. (she started on the Tuesday and they kicked in on Christmas day) In the meantime she was told to alternate with codeine and ibuprofen and use the anaesthetic spray.

It was horrible for her.

Lezbehonest · 15/01/2022 07:48

I did a work presentation with quinsy. Honestly didn't think I was thaaaat ill. Most traumatic bit was not being able to swallow my spit. I must've looked and sounded horrific though

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/01/2022 08:24

Maybe you need stronger/different ABs, and maybe for more than 5 days.

Years ago, I used to get tonsillitis every year without fail - until the year I had it so badly, I was really ill with it. I came to understand how people in Victorian novels could die from a ‘putrid sore throat’ !

First ABs didn’t seem to help, GP put me on different ones - for 2 weeks.

That sorted it, and I’ve never once had it since.
Have come to the conclusion that I must have been a carrier of the bug, which apparently does happen.

Narutocrazyfox · 15/01/2022 08:28

Speak to your Dr. OP.

What you're describing is how my quinsy started and I felt like that for a few days before it very quickly and dramatically got worse. Nip it in the bud now and get some advice x

Phone the gp. Most ear nose and throat dept have a rapid access clinic which your gp can refer you to if needs be. The on call registrar is usually around for it. If it's tonsillitis it'll take around 2 weeks to resolve completely. Around day 5-7 with antibiotics you should see an improvement. Gargling with salt water/ aspirin can help with pain and getting rid of any muck hanging about. E.n.t usually like to see quinsy just to be sure it doesn't need draining.

Spottybotty20 · 15/01/2022 20:18

I’ve been seen today by out of hours and they didn’t see an abscess so I’ve just got to persevere with the antibiotics. Had moments of feeling a bit brighter today so 🤞🏼 I’m heading the right way!
