How do I make this area wheelchair friendly?

I need to do it ASAP too as I am not sure how much longer DH will be able to tolerate getting outside. It is an area of garden outside the once defunct front door that I have managed to get open but the ground is so soft that the wheelchair is really hard to push across it.

Rubber matting like this is going to be the quickest way to make it more accessible

You need to get someone in to dig it and concrete it. Rubber mats will be a great temporary fix.

Rubber matting. Look on Facebook marketplace, preloved etc for used stable mats. Might need hosing first but much better value for money. It's tougher than play mat types, and as it's in bigger sheets it won't move as easily, and even if it does it won't matter.
Or if you can find old grey concrete slabs going free and you can transport them and you're fit enough to lay them over the mud.

If you need something very quickly then wilko usually have big rubber door mats in store which would do the job while you get a more long term solution in

Make sure the mats are a couple of inches wider than his wheelchair - and actually measure his chair, mine is wider than the measurements online say because of how it’s set up.

Also, think about how you/he are going to get the wheelchair onto the mats in the first place.

Floplast ground grab mats. Screwfix

In the short term, have you tried taking him across it backwards? It tends to be the front wheels that cause the problems.

The relative I spent Christmas with has a garden that looks similar as works overran. I had to go over it to get in the house. They managed to get me across in my wheelchair with a combination of having a piece of board to get moving on, normal ground sheets over the mud, dragging me backwards and my wheeling as well as them pulling - a second person pushing from in front would have worked.

I would also suggest a wheelchair ramp from the door onto the mat too

this is the kind of plastic matting that events will put over grass for pedestrians to walk on - there are lots of different types & sizes, and some you can hire too if it is short term.
