How long until a newly painted room loses the paint smell??

Just that. Had a room painted over two weeks ago and the paint smell is still very strong. The window is opened every day for at least 5 hours and other windows in the house are open too. My home hasn't been painted for over 20 years so this whole decorating business is new to me!

It really depends on the paint. You can get low VOC paint which has virtually no smell and then there's the more traditional ones that are used for outside or harder to paint surfaces like metal where the smell will linger for ages.

That sounds quite long to me. We recently repainted our kitchen including gloss on the skirting boards and I'm sure it wasn't that noticeable after a day or two, and I have quite a hypersensitive nose!

DappledThings · 13/01/2022 13:34

I've never noticed it after about 2 days.

I was going to say between a few days to a week, as long as the windows are open. But if you have a keen sense of smell or if it's been a while, you may still notice it a bit for some time, albeit less each day.

I think the smell lingers for longer at this time of year. Apparently cutting an onion in half and leaving it in the room is meant to help.

Did you get skirting boards and doors done with typical gloss paint. That the worst, it does last for ages.

WildRosie · 13/01/2022 15:25

Ask the Queen. She has considerable experience hanging around in newly-painted rooms.

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 13/01/2022 19:37

@MaxNormal - yes, it does seem a long time, doesn't it? Didn't expect it to last this long.

@FourTeaFallOut - no, just the walls - skirting boards are being done when the carpet is taken up, before new carpet is put down. Now you've said that about gloss, I don't think I'll bother as the smell from that might last for years!! Grin

@BigbreastsBiggerbeard what paint did you use?
We used Dulux which is apparently low VOC now it smell wise as I said was quite good.

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 13/01/2022 21:31

It was a Dulux one, just says Walls and Ceilings, Magnolia (I'm old fashioned!!) so if all Dulux are low VOC, then it's even odder. There's definitely a, in my opionion, significant odour. I always thought you got used to smells so that you didn't notice them after a while but it's the first thing I notice when I walk in the front door (room is directly opposite front door). It's not a terrible smell, just clearly a 'freshly painted' smell.

How long did it take for the smell to leave? I had a ceiling painted 3 days ago and I still smell it slightly. Wondering what I can expect?

Burn candles, leave cut onions around which absorb the smell or sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on a few plates around which will work too.
