Revolut Card

Does any here use a Revolut card? I'm thinking of ordering one for use on holiday for day to day purchases and the odd cash withdrawal and would like to hear any pros and cons if possible Smile. Do you use like a normal debit card i.e. does it have a pin or is it just contactless, has there been anywhere you haven't been able to use it?

Yes I have one, and my husband does too. We use it for holidays, and we really like it. You have the option of a physical card, with a pin and you can add it to your Google pay/android pay as well. The only downsides I have found are that there is a cap on how much you can transfer per day (I think £300) so it's worth being prepared in advance if you need more than that, and also the exchange rate at weekends when banks are closed isn't always as good. If you'd like a referral code please let me know!

CMOTDibbler · 13/01/2022 11:48

I've got one and am very happy with it. Works just like a normal debit card and can do contactless/physical card/phone

SuperDuperJezebel · 13/01/2022 11:49

I also like that I can send money to international bank accounts (eg sending money to my friend in the ROI when she ordered something I couldn't get in the UK), I was able to transfer to euros and send to her instantly, I can't remember how much it cost but it was miniscule.

BareBelliedSneetch · 13/01/2022 11:50

I have one and used it on holiday with no issue.

I discovered that easyJet wouldn’t take it onboard though, as it’s a pre-loaded card, rather than debit or credit. I assume they have no way of checking, when in the air, if it has credit on it or not.

StrangeAddiction · 13/01/2022 12:01

I have one and I like that it's not limited to a certain currency. Just put your money into your account and it's in GBP but it automatically converts to whatever the currency is in the country you're in.

@SuperDuperJezebel was that a transfer to her Revolut card or to a ROI bank account? Thanks
Mundra · 13/01/2022 12:08

What are their charges for the conversion @StrangeAddiction?

SuperDuperJezebel · 13/01/2022 12:28

I just checked and she also has revolut. I think the cost to me was converting into Euros, but I can't remember! Here's the info on fees:

You could open a Starling account. No fees for anything including unlimited worldwide spending and cash withdrawals.

etulosba · 13/01/2022 12:49

I would just open a Starling account too. I’ve had one for years and used it to withdraw cash all over the world without any issues. For purchases, I generally use a Halifax Clarity credit card.

I also like that I can send money to international bank accounts

Are you sure you can’t do this with your existing bank account? You can with both Barclays and Starling.

Sexnotgender · 13/01/2022 12:49

Yes, had one for years. Love it.

Sunsetsupernova · 13/01/2022 12:53

I second Starling. I used to have a Revolut then got a Starling card. Loved it so much, I closed all of our Lloyds accounts and use Starling full time now

Shamoo · 13/01/2022 13:09

I’m overseas using my Monzo card at the moment and it’s fantastic. No charge for use of card, and excellent exchange rates, plus the app is very good. Account and card free. There is a cap on free overseas withdrawals (£200 or £300 a month I’m not sure) but I just pay using the card and that’s unlimited.

Fatgalslim · 13/01/2022 13:12

Thanks for all the info, I'm happy with my current bank account and not looking to switch, so Starling is out. I'll mostly use it for paying for stuff in shops, restaurants etc., and very little on cash withdrawals or I may just take a little currency with me for taxis etc.

Thanks all, much appreciated :-)

I had a Monzo car and outside Europe there are charges if you withdraw more than £100 cash every 30 days. An impractical limit for me.

etulosba · 13/01/2022 13:18

Card, not car.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/01/2022 13:19

You don't have to switch, you can run a second account. I've got three current accounts right now and in the days when they paid interest, had quite a few more Smile.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/01/2022 13:20

That's the big advantage of Starling over Monzo @etulosba, no charges on currency withdrawal.

As far as I can see, everything has a disadvantage compared to Starling, so I can't see why you'd choose any other debit payment system.

etulosba · 13/01/2022 13:20

You don’t have to switch. You aren’t limited to having just one bank account.

CestTout · 13/01/2022 14:19

I love my Revolut card and use it to save up for holiday spending money. However I am now going to have a look at Starling!

amusedbush · 13/01/2022 14:57

I’ve had a Revolut card for a few years, I got it for holidays and only ever use it abroad. It has been fine apart from one incident where their servers went down (or whatever happens to banking stuff) and when I tried to pay for a meal in Paris, the card was repeatedly declined. I used my debit card to pay then noticed that the money had been held on my Revolut card as a pending transaction. I tried to phone them but they didn’t have a phone number so I had to try and find free wifi to get someone on their live chat, which was shit.

It took a month to get the money unfrozen because they kept insisting that they weren’t holding it. It was likely a freak glitch but it put me off a little.

guessmyusername · 13/01/2022 16:05

I had one for use abroad, but I dumped it for Starling, must have been better rates or something. No idea why you think you need to switch current account. Mine is with High Street Bank. I haven't used any cards recently as not been abroad for a while.....

Fatgalslim · 13/01/2022 16:21

OK, maybe I should have said I don't want another bank account, that's why the Revolut card appealed to me.

OP posts:
Doubleraspberry · 13/01/2022 16:32

Transfers to international bank accounts are free with Revolut, whereas my bank charges for them. No idea how banks do free transfers.

I'm also now looking at Starling. I pay for a Revolut premium account as you get a higher withdrawal limit and travel insurance with it.

etulosba · 13/01/2022 19:42

It’s a good idea to have more than one card when a abroad road anyway. An ATM ate one of mine on the first day of a US road trip.
